Forum Homebuilt Systems : New Build 6850 vs 6870 vs 550ti vs any other similar cards

I will eventually be purchasing a video card to play games like Fallout and Elder Scrolls, so I wanted to know what is the best card around the $150 mark. My current monitor is a 20" HP x20led, but I intend to upgrade to a 23"+ 1080P monitor in the future. I would prefer to be able to play at the highest settings, but I don't intend to use AA. On a monitor this size, resolutions above 720P really shouldn't be noticeable.

Out of those 3 cards (or any comparable cards), which is best?

Yes, the 6800-series card are best value for money.

The 6850 is the best card for $150. It doesn't really have competition for this award.

If you can get a 6870 for the $150, I would do it, but last I checked the 6870s were significantly above that mark.

Nvidia doesn't even have a real competitor in this space. The 550TI even gets beat by the 6790.

I agree with sosofm, BUT...new cards are right around the corner, from both AMD and nVidia. Since you say your purchase will be "eventual," it is likely that the best option at a given price will have changed by then. Check back when you are closer to buying.

for resolutions upto 1080p you cannot get any better card than the 6870 in that price range. you could x-fire later, and would give you a decent life.

Motherboard only supports one PCI Express card (H61 Board), so that isn't an option.
But I am pretty much settled on either a 6850 or 6870. Are the Sapphire cards of decent quality?
They looked cheaper in case and cooling compared to HIS cards, but they seem to get better reviews.

Sapphire is good. I have used their cards in the past.

Any idea if this card will get much cheaper? I was going to purchase the 6870 HIS Turbo X (Overclocked), but it went out of stock and every other store seems to deactivated it. Say within one month, what are the chances of this card falling in price much with sales?

I got the Sapphire 6850 and it seems to really perform.
I tried overclocking it and testing it in Unigine Heaven and without voltage adjustments I got a pretty
good overclock. Went from 775 MHZ Core to 900MHZ core, and 1000MHZ Memory to 1150 MHZ Memory.
950MHZ without voltage adjustments and the computer seems to crash entirely.
