am3 is for cpu, phenom, fx, athlon

FM1 is for APU, ie A8-xxxx

APU has a built in graphics chip and is not compatible with am3, and vice-versa.

Socket FM1 is only for Llano; A4, A6, A8 series APUs.

APU = Accelerated Processing Unit = This is a term AMD created to describe a CPU core and graphics core in one single chip. Llano is AMD's current generation APU. The next generation APU will be known as Trinity and it will use a different socket; socket FM2.

Intel's Sandy Bridge Core i3/i5/i7 (and budget Pentium series too) also have a CPU core and graphic core in one single chip, but Intel still calls them CPUs.
