My old rig is a Maximus 2 formula with the Supreme FX X-Fi card. Q6600 quad CPU.
I am trying to turn it into an HTPC but am having problems converting the sound to 7.1 from my receiver.
My Onkyo SR608 doesn't have separate RCA inputs for the 7.1 surround so I have the PC connected to the receiver with the S/PDIF cable but am only getting stereo.
I have a 9800GTX video card. It has a digitial-in two pin plug on it. I can't figure if the X-Fi card has S/PDIF out on it, as I've read that I can connect the sound card to the two pin S/PDIF on the video card and send the audio through an HDMI cable. I am using a DVI to HDMI adapter.
What are my options to get this thing to play 7.1?
I figured I answered my own question. I would have to have a receiver that could accept RCA plugs for the seven channels and then I would need stereo mini jacks to convert the outputs on the Supreme FX into RCA. Using the S/PDIF, I would only get stereo, at best 5.1.
Funny when you buy a video card that is already a couple years old and then you try to use it again 3 years later.
Just glad technology is far enough ahead that the video card that I need is dirt cheap.
You could always buy a cheap Radeon HD6450 or GeForce 430 and use the card's HDMI to do 7.1. Shouldn't cost more than $30. Unless you were looking to game on this HTPC...
I went middle of the road Radeon 6750. Figure if I get the gaming bug it will suffice. I do agree on your entry level cards though. Thanks for the reply!
