Forum CPU & Components : CPUs What should be upgraded?

Word :    Username :

Hello Everyone,

I have the following parts in my system:

CPU: AMD Phenom II 720 (Unlocked 4th core and clocked to 3.2 ghz)

VIdeo Card: AMD 4850x2 (512mb per core)

Ram: 8 Gig

HD: Western Digital 1TB 7200 rpm

I play a fair amount of games on my PC. Recently, though, I have been running into instances where my computer will stutter or I have to run the game in lower settings.

Which part(s) do you think I should replace to fix this? I have about $500 to work with. It isn't a lot. I was thinking of getting a Phenom II 980 and overclocking it to 4.2 ghz... I was also thinking I should replace the video card.

What do you guys think?

Thanks!

Hello guanojones;

I'm thinking the video card(s) upgrade would be most effective.
But your budget is just about large enough to get a new video card, along with a new CPU/MB/RAM.
What resolution is your monitor? And what games are you playing now?
Have a decent PSU in your system?

I have a Corsair 850W PSU. I play games at 1080p resolution. The games I play the most are skyrim, BF3, and SWTOR.

Reply to guanojones

BF3 would be more GPU dependent, SWTOR more CPU dependent and Skyrim about in the middle.

Hi :)

Your cpu is adequate for gaming but your twin cards are not these days....spend your money on a BIG card and you will be fine....

All the best Brett :)

For $500 you could get a 7950 but it might be too much to spend on a gpu. I think upgrading to a 6950 or 560 ti might be good and save your money and wait to upgrade to ivybridge and then getting crossfire/sli after.
