If both Core 2 Duo and Sandy Bridge Core i3 (socket 1155) both have the same clock speed, the Core i3 would have about 20% more CPU processing power. That does not mean you will get a 20% boost in gaming performance though.

The Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor used a microarchitecture called Core. When we released the 1st generation Intel Core i3 processors we made a number of changes including a new microarchitecture, including the memory controller on the processor, and for the first time including a IGP (Integrated Graphics on Processor). In this most you would have seen a 15% to 20% improvement in performance at the same clock speed. When we went from the 1st generation to the 2nd generation Intel Core processors you would have seen around an additional 10% to 15% improvement in performance. So if you were to compare the Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 at 3.16GHz vs the Intel Core i3-2100 you would most likely see a performance difference of 25% to 30% overall for the Intel Core i3-2100. Thank you for that bit of information. That's good know. I've built several systems with the i3-2100 and i3-2120 and a good graphics card. I was always amazed at how that little dual core performed at gaming. It literally flies. Hyper threading must really work. Most amazing $120 processor I've seen.
