Im looking to build a system based on this for a family member. Can anyone point me in a direction for this?
I was going to couple this with the new 7970 (is that the one) from amd as he wants it to be purely for gaming and has read that amd's often perform as well if not better than intels for gaming..
He read wrong! AMD FX is mediocre at gaming and no competition for Intel's I5 and I7 CPU's!
Performance for the price gaming would be a system based on I5 2500K with a Z68 or P67 chipset motherboard!
So, this kid has a 980X and 6990 and still wants a new computer? You might want to slap him and tell him to learn to appreciate what he already has, it's absolutely insane to replace a year old computer built with the best parts that existed at the time.
He's a little on the spoiled side.
So I'd he wants to get a 7970 or 2 would that give a performance boost?
He wants more fps.
how does the pie 3 vs2 factor into any of this
Two 6990s would be better performance than two 7970s, and is cheaper since he already has one.
That said, he's not going to notice any of this. Every single game today is playable at max settings with a single 6990. The human eye cannot tell a difference between 90 and 100 FPS. I don't care who says they can tell, they can't. Your eye just isn't that sensitive.
I'd also recommend spoiling him a lot less, you're setting a bad precedent by giving him very expensive things not because he needs or can use them, but simply because he wants them.

Don't know why i couldn't edit my post so sorry for double posting:
As for 7970 x2, that would be better performance than 6990, but not as much as he would expect. Drivers are not mature enough yet.
If I was him would wait a bit for what nvidia has to offer since 6990 is pretty upper high-end still.
If nvidia doesnt deliver, buy another 6990 and crossfire them.
