The best way is probably put the hard disk drive from the dead desktop in an external USB adapter.
Then you can plug the USB adapter into your laptop and use it as an external drive, navigate to your Users/YourName/Desktop folder to copy off the files/data there.
Hi yes that would work. make sure your desktop drive is sata not pata. if its pata then get a pata enclosure. do you know what killed your desktop? if the hard disk has died then you have a problem
So you are saying I should take out the hard disk from my dead desktop, with the help of the adaptor, plug it in my laptop so that I can copy my data over?
Is there another way other than this?
unlikley that you will be able to fit the drive in the lappy so yeah it is the best way to do this.
dont forget though that the hdd is a desktop hdd so you will need an enclosure with its own power supply. as it may not get enough from a laptops usb connectors.. it may work ok but its better to be safe than blowing the usb ports.

all 3.5" inclosures need an external power supply as they need a 12v input . laptop drives only need 5v which it can get though usb port. i would maybe plug drive into a friends pc internally to see if it works. if it does you could copy to a usb stick to transfer. i would still get enclosure and use that as a backup
How sure are you it's a bad graphics card/chip keeping your desktop from booting?
That could be an easy replacement.
When I did a reboot on my old desktop, at first it went to the blue screen & after that the whole screen was black & I can see some colour lines flickering. I've tried to plug the monitor using the new laptop & it's working fine.
Does your monitor plug into the video connector on the slot card - just below the speaker connectors?
Or in the black area above the speaker connectors?
