Ok, my current system is as follows

AMD 955 BE
8GB RAM
Biostar 890FXE
2 6870's
1 OCZ SSD(not used as OS drive becasue it failed too many times so I put my games on it)

I am thinking about either getting a new 8150 and new AM3+ Mobo or possibly getting an i7 and new mobo. I know Intel scored better on most benchmarks. I mainly used my computer for games and virtual machines. I am not sure which way to go. New AMD or switch to intel. If you suggest Intel, which i7 would you suggest?

Intel i5 2500k, for games there is more a less no difference between performance with the i5 2500k and the best i7, Plus the 2500k is imo very affordable, I really wouldnt recommend the 8150, it just isnt good at all

The 955be will normally play games better than a 6 or 8 core cpu.
That is because games rarely use more than 2 or 3 cores so the extra cores are unused, and it is easier to get a few cores to run at higher clocks.
The 6 and 8 core cpu's are still good value for multithreaded apps.

Therefore, for games, the 2500K is about as good as it gets. It will conservatively oc about as high as a 2600K. The extra $100 you pay for one more stock multiplier and some cache does not seem to be worth it, and is better spent elsewhere. There may be some features on the 2600K that apply to virtual machines, you need to research that since I am no expert there.

Regardless, get lots of ram for virtual machines and heavy multitasking. Look at a 4 x 4gb 16gb kit. Ram is cheap.

An FX-8150 is a sideways move for you in gaming performance, so go Intel.

The i7-2600K is incredible, but for your uses, you should save the $100 and get an i5-2500K - it is just as incredible.

No one will suggest you waste your money on an AM3+ platform.

i agree with the rest of the posters on the thread.... the FX-8150 is performing worse than the i3-2100 in gaming so go with the 2500k since the 2600k is overkill in your case

With your current setup, I see no compelling reason for upgrade. Your 955 BE even at stock should easily handle the CF 6870.
If you haven't done so, buy an aftermarket cooler that will fit in your case & OC your 955BE. It is Black Edition for that reason. You could squeeze a few more months if not years before you really need an upgrade.

On the otherhand, it is such a waste not to be able to use your SSD as OS drive. Perhaps you can open another thread to seek help how to make it into your OS drive & get the most out of it.

Yeah, I will probably OC my 955. The OCZ SSD is too unstable to use as my OS drive. I had to reinstall Windows aobut 7 times in a few month period. I am currently looking at a new Patriot 120GB ssd though.

Wait until ivybridge, then come back and ask. That would be a good time to upgrade.

Sure get the Bulldozer if you want a downgrade from what you have now.

How did you install your OS in the SSD? If you install it under default settings, it might be on IDE which is not recommended for SSD. Try to change it to AHCI (under BIOS usually in Peripherals Menu).

Yes go to bios and enable AHCI and re-install your OS on the ssd.
Also might want to have a look here.

Nothing wrong with a 955BE rig imo.

get good air/water cooling solution and hit 4ghz on 955 and thus no need to upgrade.

If you want
If your current board is a expensive am3+ board (200+) and you play games and use vms at same time and do not want to switch your board then you can consider 8170
otherwise wait for ivy or get a 2500k or 2700k
