I'm building a new PC and was wondering if I should bother to reuse my old Sound Blaster card I bought back in Nov of 2006. Its a Creative SOUND BLASTER X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz and the new motherboard I have is the Intel DX79SI which has the Realtek ALC892. Guess my question is has onboard sound advance so much in 6 years to make my dedicated sound card obsolete?

Don't know if this will help or not but I'm planning to install Win 7 Ult 64 bit. The latest driver for Win 7 64 bit from Creative is SBXF_PCDRV_LB_2_18_0015, release date : Jun 16 2010 kinda old. And Intel AUD_Vista_Win7_6.0.1.6526_PV_Realtek, release date : Jan 02 2012 a lot newer. Again not sure if that matters.

Hello MADMCGEE;

PCI sound card + PCI slot on MB + Win7 64bit driver = happy sound card.
What are you using for speakers (or headset)?

It's true that onboard sound has advanced a lot. It's not easy to guess which option would work better for you.
You might need to conduct a 'sound off' between the two options.
I'd be interested in knowing which you think gets the best results.

I'm using some Logitech speakers ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6836121013 ) nothing fancy but planning to upgrade to 5.1 set. I would love to do a sound off but I have 2 problems. 1) is that I don't have a LGA 2011 CPU yet cause there is only one atm in stock and its over $1000 and 2) I don't have an expert ear so I'm not sure if I could hear the things I'm supposed to. I was hoping someone had a link to a thread or an article that compared the two. I tried to Google something to that extent to no avail.

I tried that, and also for the 1366 boards as well. Nothing turned up.
