Hello, before i start i need to say that i'm not the best with computers.
I just upgraded my hp pavilion computer with from a 300 watt power supply to and 650 watt power supply.
I also upgraded my video card to a nvidia 560 ti.
My motherboard is kind of old so im thinking of getting a new one if so which one? I'm looking for a motherboard good for gaming if there are such ones.
Whilst doing this i'm thinking of getting a new case hopefully for around 100 dollars.
Lastly im wondering if my processor is good enough, i've got a intel duel core i2
Thanks

other than it being old, is there any other reason to upgrade your motherboard? are you looking for new features? support a new processor? it may not be a worthwhile investment if your current board is doing fine.

not upgrading the motherboard would leave you with many case choices under $100.

your processor is probably a core i3. From that, it's not clear if it's a newer Sandy Bridge part, or the older one from last year (I don't remember what that one is called- Bloomfield maybe). either way, it's probably just fine for most games at most resolutions.

If you want to upgrade from that, you're going to spend more than $100 on just the CPU.

What board and CPU do you have? What PSU exactly did you buy? Some PSUs say they support XXX watts, when really they don't.

Full system specs please! Also, your CPU is most likely a core i3, as they don't make core i2s, unless you are getting core 2 duo confused with a core i3.

Would it be fine?

That's a pretty good case. I almost bought it, but it didn't fit in my budget. :(

And btw is Cpu and processor the same thing?

I have the core 2 duo
This is the psu i belive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817139005

That is a great PSU, no issues there, but yes, you should upgrade your CPU. What is your CPU/Motherboard budget? Also, you will most likely need new RAM too that will work with the new board and CPU.

The reason i'm upgradin is pretty much because my computer has turned off because of overheating. Therefor im also thinking of getting http://www.tigerdirect.com/applica [...] u=C13-2527

At the moment i have 8gb ram and im really not that sure what my budgets at. I guess not to high :p

Reply to Glit1

I have that cooler, and it is really good! Your CPU is slow to today's standards and will most likely bottleneck that 560 ti.

What games do you play and do you plan to OC or SLI later?

Great case check cooler check could you recommend a nice cpu and a board thats not to high?

I play Bf3 Apb and such games. Sorry dpnt know what SLI or OC is.

Reply to Glit1

SLI is Nvidia's way of taking two GPUs and running them both together. Crossfire (CF) is the same thing for AMD.

OC is overclock. You make the CPU faster at the risk of damaging it. As long as you know what you are doing it should be fine. Read guides if you want to!

So, you will benefit form a quad core CPU, but to pick the right CPU and board, I need to know if you want to OC. With a Corsair h60 like that, you can OC pretty far. I have my 2500k running @ 4.5Ghz stable with that cooler! :)

I guess i could try overclocking

Btw does the corsair h60 work with the core 2 duo?

Reply to Glit1

Yeah, if you plan to grab another CPU (which you should if you can), then don't OC. Yes, the H60 will work with the LGA775 platform.

If you plan to upgrade, go with sandy bridge. I would pair these up: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813157271 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819115072

I have them both actually.

Cant really afford that processor right now so im thinking of getting the case cooling system and the board. But you mean if i do get that processor you recommended i should not oc?

Reply to Glit1

Is changing a case hard? I'll probably have to send it in to a computer specialist so they can do it. :p

Im also wondering with that board would i have to get a cpu fan with it?

Reply to Glit1

You wouldn't be able to power on your system, hp uses different front panel connectors than regular ones.

I was saying if you plan to get a new CPU, don't OC this one, just sell it for more because it has always ran stock and don't risk breaking it. Don't buy a board and then a CPU later. Just save for a 2500k or a IB 2500k equal and a z68/p67 board.

Ah ok, is it hard installing a new case with all the components?

Nope. You just have to be careful! I CANNOT STRESS THAT ENOUGH! Touch the case with both hands every couple of minutes to release static electricity and be careful. (static electricity problem won't hurt the system, but just in case) As long as you know what goes where, you should be fine. I would suggest looking at your current machine first and making sure you know where everything goes. It pretty is simple. Watch some tutorials on youtube if you still are not sure.

Also, you said you were getting an H60 cooler, there will be a plastic piece on the back plate, DO NOT REMOVE IT! It is meant to be there. Just a word of advice. :)

Still thinking of just sending in my new case and my old case to a computer store so they can fix it. Just dobt want to *** anything up. Thanks for the advice i'll keep that in mind when installing it thanks! :)

Even the 2500k and z68 board?! And as long as it is windows, it will work. I am not sure what EN means, but yeah, if it is windows, like it said, it will work. Also, I would highly recommend reading some guides, watching some videos, and then actually putting the PC together by YOURSELF to get some experience and a better view of the hardware.

So I knows that im going to have to move over my power supply, video card, RAM and hard drive from my old case to my new case after my motherboard is installed. But is there anymore things that i need to move over aswell?

Reply to Glit1

And yes i bought the 2500 k and the z68 board aswell.

Everything but the case. Also, if you don't have DDR3 RAM, like I said, you will need to buy some.

Well not everything? I dont need to bring my old motherboard or processor?

Glit1 wrote :

Oh, well yes. Of course. Sorry, if you got a new board and CPU, then don't bring the old! :p

Also, like I said, with LGA775, you most likely had DDR2 memory, which will need to be replaced with DDR3. It won't even physically fit, so don't try to force it either.

Ah ok can you recommend anything?

Well, SB chips like 1.35v - 1.5v memory, but 1.65v is OK. I use a 1.65v kit, but I lowered the voltage and it is still stable, so good for me, but that may not work for you. I would suggest a 2x4gb 1600Mhz @ 1.5v kit form either Patriot, Corsair, Crucial, PNY, Kingston, or Mushkin. ADATA is alright, but I would stick with the other I said. They are good high-quality DIMMS.

Like these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820226219 Great RAM right there!

Got 4 of those thanks!

Um, that board cannot take 4 sets of those. The board has 4 slots and 4 sets of those would take 8 slots. Or do you mean you bought two sets of them for 16gb total?

Reply to HostileDonut

Two sets:p not that dumb

Reply to Glit1

Okay, haha! Good! That is a LOT of RAM. I hope it all works great! Let me know how it goes when you assemble it all! :)
