Hello,

I'm looking forward to build a Server, probably with a E3 Xeon.

Who makes good tower Chassis? Which is a good manufacturer of server power supplies?

Is it crazy these days to build servers? Should I drop this idea an just buy a regular Dell or HP? :o

Stability and Reliability is very important.

The server will run FreeBSD or Linux, if this is important...

Caselabs has some of the most craziest cases although they are called enthusiast cases. I'm not sure if they will fit your needs but they will fit everything you throw at it.

Corsair, OCZ, Antec, XFX, Seasonic, Rosewill, etc are all quality brands. Here is a list of all recommended PSUs.

It's crazy expensive to build a server but it's simple enough to build one. What are you going to use this for? Don't go for pre-builts because they don't offer the expandability of a custom PC / Server.

This is for 24/7 video surveillance operation.

Thank you for your info. But that seems to be for home use.

Need something for heavy duty serving.

Have you considered buying a pre-owned system?
For your use, I would recommend a Dell Poweredge 2950 or an HP Proliant G5.

As for your questions:
SuperMicro makes great towers.
Ablecom & Delta make great power supplies.
