Am i right in thinking this psu is ok ?

hi all ,ive had some trouble with my xfx pro 750w psu,ive just put together a i5 system and installed my GTX285 and when i use the gpu for 3d applications the pc shuts down ,ive been told that its the psu and have been looking at a new psu but i am on a very low budget being a single father of 2 kids ,i found this one on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/18080004 [...] 1423.l2649

is this going to be good enough for my i5 system and the GTX285 ,i dont know much about 12rail voltages etc... but have been told i need 45-50 amps to run it all ,this one has 4 rails at 20amps im a bit confused do they all share 20amps or is it a total of 80amps ? many thanks in advance

Dual fans is always a bad sign.

Easily enough though it isnt 80+ rated or branded. I would really avoid it tbh.

I would reccomend looking for a 600/650 watt PSU which is 80 rated, looking around £50.

Its either spend a little and get something what MIGHT be decent or spend a little more and get something which IS decent.

I wouldn't go with that, it's a generic PSU that in all probability will not output 800W and could damage your system.

Try trouble-shooting your issues. Stress-test your CPU with Prime95 and your GPU with Furmark, see if you have the same issue. If your system is new, then RMA your PSU and get a new, branded PSU as opposed to wasting money (and potentially your system) on junk.

Seriously. You would be better off RMA'ing the XFX.

The thing you linked which looks vaguely PSU shaped will possibly destroy all of your computer components. Get a known quality psu to avoid future heartache.

im not sure if XFX would help me ,i bought it a few months ago but stupidly paid cash and have now lost the reciept do you think i can still RMA it without the reciept ?

I have no doubt that the psu is junk and dangerous. The specs and no name scream of problems.
It has the potential to not only destroy itself, but to take the rest of your parts with it.


XFX is a quality brand, of more than sufficient power.
If it works in 2d, I do not suspect a bad psu.

Do some more problem resolution work.

1) Are the graphics pci-e power connectors properly installed?
2) Excessive heat from 3d apps can cause a shutdown. Take the side covers off, and see if that helps.
3) Can you borrow or try a different psu in your pc, or, try your psu in a different pc?

You get the idea.

I don't suppose you thought to register your PSU when you first got it to get the extended 5yr warranty?

I always staple or tape the receipt to the manual/users guide.
That's come in handy more than a few times over the years.

psu are the one thing that i dont mind going overboard on

its like breaks on your car

do you buy cheap generic ones that might when you have to do an emergency stop they do nothing

or do you pay extra and get ones that will stop you in less distance than standard breaks

in other words the more expensive powersuplies/good brands

have features in them that protect your pc components. i would rather replace a £50-200 powersuply than have to potentially replace all the parts connected to it

and the only parts not directly connected to the psu these days are:

low end graphics cards
cpu fans
some case fans
ram

thats about it
