Today, I want to get an idea of where the community stands in terms of CPU selection.

I have selected a few types of cpu from AMD and Intel, so you can select your favourite!

I personally prefer AMD as it's affordable and has great band for your buck.

feel free to post a reply explaining why! :P

EDIT:
Perhaps the question was too vague, I'll rephrase...

Lets say, under your own wallet, which one would you choose?

I voted for i5 as the 2500K was in my affordability range, and is probably the best chip I have ever owned.

I voted for the X6 T, because at their current price point and overall performance, they offer loads of value. In a value perspective, they are very hard to beat right now.

Fair enough. I heard that the i5 is great when coupled with a dx11 GPU (and a dx11 game) as it takes the strain off of the CPU.

I am a mere mortal so voting for anything out of my affordability bracket is silly or obviously a 3960X would have been the choice, right now the 2500K does the job with my 560Ti, I will wait on Ivybridge and perhaps move up to the i7 in that architecture.

Haha yeah! I wish I could afford that too, oh well, lol. My 1090T is fine for me though.

i7-2600k, you can do everything including 2d/3d, video editing, gaming all of it with a decent good price :D

Totally agree mate. I genuinly kicked myself once the i7-2600k came out - because I brought AMD -_-

The question's a bit vague. If someone's giving out free processors, I'll take the 3960X as I'm sure everyone would. On my dime, its the 2500K

I voted for the FX as it is the closest thing to what I would get, which is a pair of Opteron 6238s. Why? My board takes them and they have a good compromise between clock speed, number of cores, and price, and would be a good upgrade over the Opteron 6128s I currently have in there. Intel doesn't really have anything all that interesting for workstations right now; they are still selling the same LGA1366 Westmeres for the same prices that they did when I built this machine in the middle of 2010 :??: Intel is very overdue on that LGA2011 Xeon E5 and E7 launch...

I chose the 3960X because it represented the only LGA2011 entry. Personally, I'll be picking up the $284.99 4c/4ht 3820 in a few weeks when it ships. Tough to beat a X79 setup that will rival 2600k upper tier Z68 in price.

What are you using this computer for? You don't really say. I say either the I5 or I7 but whatever you do I would stay far away from the Bulldozer.

First I'd never consider a 2700K as it's the same exact thing as the 2600K with just a single multiplier increase for a substantial increase in cost. This represents a trend Intel and AMD have both held over the years, end of life rebranding. Unless you plan to run these cpus at stock speeds, they offer no difference whatsoever.

More importantly the 3820 represents a price/performance equal to the 2600K, but doing so on a much more robust platorm, LGA2011.

If I absolutely had to place an order for a CPU within the next 24 hours it would be either the i5-2500k or the i7-2600k (since I do a little bit of video encoding where HT comes in handy).

2500K; $180 at Micro Center, plus the day I picked it up they were doing a bundle deal for $60 off the price of any Z68 mobo. I purchased a P8Z68-V Pro, for a total of ~$350 (with tax) for both. This is my first homebuild so I don't have much PC experience, but I'm telling you, this chip is faster than lightning and easy to overclock. Now tell me how AMD is the "bang-for-your-buck king"? I realize that lots of people in the world do not live close to a Micro Center, but even at $220-$250 this processor still beats the FX-8150.
