Corsair HX850 vs NZXT Hale82

Building a gaming system with Core i5 2500k and Radeon HD 7970. Will overclock both and plan to add another 7970 in future. Which PSU would you recommend?

I was about to buy Hale82, but read the Jonnyguru review and was concerned. The Corsair is Silver Certified whereas Hale82 is only Bronze Certified. Does the certification really matter? Corsair also has a few more cables and is 50 bucks costlier.

Any thoughts? Other PSU recommendations?

There's also the NZXT Hale 90 series. Gold, Modular, etc. ...

And the enermax modu87+ series, which also got gold, modular and tested to be very silent, too.

You can get all of these for the price of that corsair (or even less, depends on where you buy/live).

The Hale 90 is for 180 bucks on Newegg whereas I can't find a 850W enermax within my budget or in stock.

I recommend the 750W XFX Pro Edition. It's 80+ Silver, jonnyguru liked it and it's significantly cheaper. The Hale90 is about the best thing out there, but I don't think it's worth the money. You could go 850W if you want. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817207016

Like I said, depends on where you buy/live.

For instance over here the Corsair hx850 is about 162€ and the Hale 90 850W 169€.

A 7970 needs about 240-250W. Take that *2 for CF + System ~150W = 650W. A quality 700W Gold PSU should do it, too. There is an Enermax Modu 87+ with 700W available, iirc. And there's also a 750W Hale 90 available for 20 less than the 850 version.

You should only be concerned about the findings in the JG review if you know that you will be subjecting your PSU to temperatures above 40C.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I know 750W will probably be enough for 7970 CF, but I was inclined for 850W just to be on "the safe side". I'm sure there are a lot of people who think like me and go for the overkill.

By the way, why doesn't anyone recommend the two following units?

At $150, it is cheaper than the Kingwin 850W as well as Rosewill Capstone 750W. This particular unit has excellent ratings on Newegg and I had the feeling that Corsair in general make very good units.

I know 1000W is definitely an overkill, but at $140, it is cheaper than a lot of 750W and 850W PSUs. Plus, it has great ratings, is modular and Bronze Certified. What am I missing?

That Corsair unit is a really good PSU and at $135 after promo code and rebate it's also a good deal, but it's not less than the Capstone. The Capstone is currently $120...$15 less without having to wait for the $20 rebate. If you want to go overboard, then the Corsair you linked is a good unit.

I don't normally recommend Coolermaster PSUs, but the one you're looking at is mfr by FSP - a reputable OEM for PSUs. You would prbably be ok with that unit, but among those three my preference would be Capstone, Corsair, and the Coolermaster in a distant third.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Corsair Professional Series HX850W (CMPSU-850HX). Even all of the reputable PSU test review sites rate it as one of the best performing 850W PSUs on the market.

The Cooler Master Silent Pro M1000 (RS-A00-AMBA-J3) suffers from mediocre voltage regulation.

The Capstone one is not modular

I'm leaning towards Corsair again. I just don't know whether it is worth to shell out 50 bucks extra for it over the Hale82 (my original dilemma). I have no idea whether I'll be subjecting the PSU to over 40c. Like I said, the maximum stress it would have is 7970 CF and i5 2500k, both overclocked.

Why are you comparing an 850 unit with a 750 unit?

The Hale 90 - 850W while a solid unit I am sure, is more expensive than the Corsair... if you one want a 750w unit you should be comparing it with: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] &Tpk=HX750

You are probably fine with the Hale 82 if you keep your temps in check.

I apologize for going in circles. I had done some research and hence was finalized on those two PSUs in the title. The advantages of Corsair over Hale82 are clear (better reliability, peace of mind, more cables), but I've decided it's not worth the 50 bucks. Also, no one has spoken *bad* things about the Hale82, and crossfiring is at least an year down the line.

I had "not recommended" the HX 850 because you were already considering it.

What case are you going to be installing it into?
If the PSU is bottom mounted or otherwise in a separate thermal zone to the CPU and other heat generating components then it shouldn't have to deal with high temperatures.

Another advantage to the HX 850 compared to the Hale82 is the fact that it is likely to be quieter. They both have a similar minimum fan speed of ~1000RPM(+/- 100RPM), but the HX 850 has had it's fan at maximum load measured at only ~1370RPM, whereas the Hale82 gets all the way up to ~2300RPM.

The Hale is very good if that saves you cash.
I recommend both units all the time.
