Optical Audio not working

Forum CPU & Components : Sound Cards Optical Audio not working

Hello everyone. I have a built in optical audio output on my motherboard and am having issues with it actually outputting sound. I have the cable plugged into my Turtle Beach x41 receiver and when I try to play any audio from iTunes or anything else I get no sound through my headset and the optical input light on the receiver is not on. If I open up the playback devices, open up the properties of the optical output and select the supported formats tab I can hear audio when highlighting 44.1 kHz or 48.0 kHz and click on the test button. My optical output is set as the default device, I have the latest drivers installed and I've hooked up the x41 receiver to my old Sony laptop that has optical output and it works fine. Here are my specs.

Mobo - MSI 890FXA-GD70
CPU - AMD FX 6100
GPU - Radeon HD 6870
OS - Windows 7 pro. x64

I was also wondering if there would be a way for me to have the optical audio hooked up to my x41 receiver and my computer speakers that use a 2.5mm jack hooked up at the same time and both play the same audio. I use the speakers for listening to music and watching movies but I'd like to use the headset for gaming and not have to unplug and plug stuff back in all the time or constantly have to change which one is the default device. If there is no way to config this then I'll live with it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
