Hi there. I do very heavy 3D (Cinema 4D), HD After Effects and Adobe Premiere editing work.

 

We currently have a dual Operton 6128 on an Asus (KGPE-D16) board with 64GB ram and an Nvidia GTX 580 video card.

 

We are using this machine as our main render engine.

 

Would it be in our interest to upgrade to a dual Opterton 6272 system for what we do?

 

I've read a lot of bad things about Bulldozer, but I don't know if the 6272 has it (or if I currently do with the CPUs I have, for that matter). Or if it even matters for our particular usage.

 

Would I be going from a 16-core system to 32-cores? Is it that simple, or is there more to it?

Thanks. I'd be very curious, though, to see any comparison of the 6128 and 6272 side-by-side. I've searched all over, but haven't found it.

Hopefully someone on here knows, huh?

Well, I upgraded from the dual 6128 to the dual 6272 and despite what's said above, it is A LOT faster. Running 32 cores at 2.1 GHz is significantly faster than running 16 cores at 2.0 Ghz.

Maybe there's more to it than I'm simplifying it to. But I can tell you that this machine is a bulldozer for sure.

A real-world comparison:

For a Cinema 4D 22 hours to render on an overclocked i7 980X (4.2ghz, 24GB ram) takes the following:

22 hours - i7 980x
19 hours - dual Opteron 6128 with 64GB ram
11 hours - dual Opteron 6272 with 64GB ram

I'm getting similar numbers for After Effects renders.

I don't care what benchmarks say. When it comes down to it, I just care about real-world testing. Your millage probably will vary, but for the renders we do, the Opterons ROCK! A Dual 6272 is crazy fast. Not to mention, it will run at 100% for hours and not even get very hot!

What graphics cards are you using? I like to use c4d for these awesome physics tests. Especially 3d renders with grayscale gorilla's light kit pro. Can I ask what you do with c4d? Need some tips from the pro's.

I have a GTX 470 in there right now. Most of our stuff is for a kids' show. I think that 99% of the work is done on the CPUs, not GPUs... at least for what we do.

I just got Grayscale's light kit a couple weeks ago, but I haven't used it yet. I will soon, probably this week.
