Hi, I own an astro mixamp with astro a40 headphones. I want to pair them with a new sound card for my pc build. Should I buy a sound card with a headphone amp or is my mixamp a headphone amp? If my mixamp is a sufficient headphone amp which sound card makes a good pairing with the a40/mixamp? If it isn't a headphone amp which sound card would you guys suggest? Thank you.

Why would you get a soundcard if you already have the mixamp? :heink:

Wouldn't bother. If you use the mixamp, that means you connect via optical, which means you will be downconverting most of your audio on the PC to low quality, lossy audio formats [Dolby/DTS].

There is very little reason to ever buy a soundcard to use its optical port. You lose too much sound quality that way.

Ah. Well what if I were to simply use the mixamp as a headphone amp and allow the sound card to decode the dolby surround. That way there won't be a downing process. From what I understand about the mixamp, it is simply a headphone amp that provides the necessary power to drive a higher than average impedance headphone. Also, in terms of using an optical cable. I've noticed significantly better stereo sound quality coming out of my mixamp than from running straight out of the headphone jack.
