I haven't seen a 940 processor in a while. You may be better off going with the 6 core Lisbon and a new mobo.

I am not interested in going with new equipment, I am looking for the fastest 940 cpu to work in the stuff I have. I build for fun not for competition I like to make the old stuff work at it's best and also find that it is effective for all I need. I just thought it would be fun to max out the old mobo. Not to mention that I have very little invested and very little to invest.

The fastest single-core is the 3.0 GHz Opteron 256/856, and the fastest dual-core is the 2.8 GHz 290/890. The x56s are going to be faster in 1 to 2-thread tasks and the x90s are going to be faster in 3+ thread tasks. If it were me, I'd get one of the x90s. However, they are ridiculously expensive since they are generally regarded as the fastest Socket 940 CPU.
