Forum CPU & Components : CPUs Intel Core i3 vs. Pentium G860

Hi.

I've bought a new motherboard with Intel P67 chipset (asus p8p67) and now I'm looking for a CPU. I was almost determined to buy Intel core i3 but today I came across Intel Pentium G860 which is considerably cheaper and its essential specifications are not too different from Core i3 (except clock speed and number of threads).

What I plan to do with my PC is mainly to edit amateurish videos and produce audio with audio sequencing software. Games are almost at the bottom of the list, but sometimes I'm in doubt though :) But still, maybe somebody could give me advice in choosing between these two CPU's? Thanks

get i3 of it's higher clock speed.overall performance of i3 better.

The Intel® Core™ i3-2100 is the better option not just because of the faster clock speed but it also has hyper-threading that does help when multi-tasking and running application that are multi-threaded. Here is how the two processors stack up against each other. http://ark.intel.com/compare/53422,53492

I'd bite the bullet and go for the i3.

as far as an htpc is concerned would the pentium cpu be enough? the g860 has "HD graphics" but Im not too sure what that meens....no specifics. im hoping to put this into a media server to stream video over my network...buying a cheap videocard wont be out of the question if on die graphics wont work for me.

Can't find any info, so I'm not sure if it means the g860 has the Intel HD 2000 or something lower.

I would prefer to get the i3-2100 since that definitely has the Intel HD 2000 which is capable of HD video playback. The Pentium G860 + low end video card = more expensive than the i3-2100.

why buy a p67 board for an i3? Its such a waste. Board will also disable the onboard integrated graphics.

Hmmm... I missed that like piece of info.

Yeah, only a motherboard with the H67 or Z68 chipset will allow you to use the integrated graphics core. Therefore, regardless of whichever socket 1155 CPU you buy, you will need to buy a graphics card as well.

i3 + H61 motherboard.

The i3 has the greater clockspeed, is a dual core with Hyper threading while the G860 isn't.

I believe the difference in clockspeed is only 100MHz.

Hyper Threading is nice, but only useful for programs that have been designed to use it.
