Forum CPU & Components : Servers Is the intel i7 950 quad recommended for servers

looking to build a small server using the i7 quad 950 for small office of less than ten users. Will be installing Windows Server 2008 R2. The server will be a domain controller, DNS, DHCP and serve as an application server. I plan to install 12gig of DDR3 to 640g WD Black Label Drives. I have looked at the Xeon processors but I am not sure if it is worth the money compared to the horsepower of the i7. If you know of any issues with i7 processors and Win 2008 please advise. Thanks

Wayne

Server are not worth the money unless your planing to turn it on 24/7... I Recommend waiting for the 1k CPU LGA 2011 to come out because it's totally worth the money, it price is also based on Xeon...

Thanks for the info. However, I am faced with limited time. They're wanting this up and running in next two weeks. The server will be running 24/7 Doctors remoting in all hours.

I would recommend the Intel Xeon, because it is a work horse and is made for server computing. The Intel Core i7 is more of a gamer/enthusiast processor. I also think, from long term perspective the Intel Xeon will perform better and will surpass your expiations. I have a list below of some Intel Xeons that will last longer and surpass the power of the Intel Core i7 950.

Thanks for the information. I ended up going with the Xeon E5620, 12gig of ram and a Tyan barebones server.

Good choice for for a server build on a budget build... I Wouldn't even bother with the 2Grand Xeon CPU since they are for company Users...

you can go with the i5 2400. with 8gb ram, i work with server 2008r2 all the time and it doesnt use much cpu or ram. with 60+ users logged on. about 0 - 10% cpu and 2gb ram. just make sure the netowork speeds are good
