So the internal sound broke on my computer :(
I'm trying to get the front audio pannel to work (just the headphone port)
Bought a sound card off of ebay and it came with a 4 pin audio header set up like this
(RGGL) right, ground, ground, left
I looked at the pinout of the AC97 10 pin connectors and pulled out pin 5 (right channel) pin 9 (left channel) and pin 2 (ground) and hooked it up.
The audio out on the back still works, but I hear no sound out of the front audio jack. Did I set something up wrong? When I plug in headphones there's that kinda clicky-scratchy sound that comes out of my powered speakers. But no sound out the headphones.

In your description of what you did with pulling out the pins you only described three pins and you need four , right, ground, ground and left. Unless you left out one and didn't list it , I'm just going by what you posted , so you need another ground?
Anytime you start fooling around with something liks this it doesn't mean it's a simple thing even though it seems like it should be.

There is only one ground pin in AC97
see http://www.intel.com/support/mothe [...] 015851.htm
unless pin 4 should be plugged into ground on the sound card for sense

One other thing, the 2 ground pins share the same trace on the board, so it seems like it woulden't mater which ground pin I put the ground connector on. Here's a link to the sound card I bought if it helps. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.d [...] 0755245805

Oh, found this http://www.sevenforums.com/attachm [...] dongle.png
I'm going to try and hook it up like this.

EDIT nope

Second edit, hmm, I can't find any mention of a 4 pin audio out. I have an old motherboard and the 4 pin is marked AUX1. and another says CD1. But on the internet, there is no mention of a 4 pin front panel. (headphone only)

Ok, this should close the thread. Turns out that there is no 4 pin output, only a 4 pin input.

So it doesen't mater what I hook up there. Headphones don't work on a microphone port. (DO'H)

I know you would rather plug your headphones in the front panel but you could plug them in the back in the sound card.

That's what I'm doing. Just makes the cord a bit short.

I have done the same thing and what I did is buy this exrension;

Iy's a little pricey but I wanted quality and there are a lot more that are more resonably priced.

I've got one of those. It's being used elsewhere and it cost me $3 or so. I don't think the gold plated connectors really do anything when you're just trying to watch youtube and play a few games.
