Forum CPU & Components : Power Supplies, Cases & Mods [Solved] Help Choosing a Power Supply

I'm working on a new build (not for gaming) and need some help in choosing a power supply to go with it. I'd like it to be fully modular (or at least only have the motherboard connectors permanently attached). The modularity and as quiet as possible are far more important than price on this one. The computer will be used for programming/sysadmin work as well as hosting virtual machines in VMware or VirtualBox, GNS3 labs, etc.

Here are the components that will go in here (please don't hesitate to tell me if I've picked anything stupid):
CPU: Intel i7 2600k
Motherboard: ASRock P67 Extreme4 (B3)
RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance (4 x 4GB)
Video Card(s): Unknown at this time. I need to drive 3 monitors, but I don't game at all. (See here for more details: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] monitors). In my build spreadsheet, I had 2 EVGA GeForce GT 430s
Linux OS drive: Crucial C300 SSD 128GB
Windows OS drive: WD Caviar Blue 250 GB (I will very rarely boot into Windows, it's just for this one application that has no Linux equivalent)
Data Drives: 4x Samsung Spinpoint F4 2TB (Raid 10, or possibly 5, but probably 10)
RAID Controller: 3ware 9650-se-4lpml
Optical Drive: Samsung blu-ray reader

Obviously I left out some stuff, but things like "UPS or Windows install media" doesn't really have any bearing on the power supply choice.

Both are Corsair; good quality, and either one will work for your listed requirements.

You have two video cards that are powered by the PCI-E ports, so you don't need an insane amount of power.

Because of all the disks, you'll need a moderate amount of power though.

This is a solid award-winning supply that would work just fine:

It has 9 possible SATA connections.

I can't really recommend anything else that would be better or a better deal to suit your needs.

You haven't really picked anything stupid at all.

Get the Seasonic X-650.. For the amount of power your rig will need, that PSU will work almost fanless.. Can't really get more silent than that.. It is bit costly though.. But an excellent product none the less..

Corsair don't have a 650W version of the Seasonic X series.

I don't see why this wouldn't be enough:

You could probbaly get by with a 500 watter but buying anything less than 650 just doesn't save you any money unless quality is low. Give the usage, you by no means need a 1st tier unit and a 2nd tier will serve more than well.

1st Tier - Corsair HX/AX, Antec SG/CP/HCP, Seasonic X, XFX Black Edition
2md Tier - Corsair TX, ANtec EA/TPNew, XFX Core Edition.

I'd grab this:

Thanks guys. I was about to spend way more than I needed to on a power supply.

Out of curiosity, what needs those high powered units? High end video cards?

With something around 750 watts, I assume that I'd have enough headroom for later expansion, right?

You could run 2 GTX 580s with one of those Corsair 750W units:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] -_-Product

It has enough Amps on the 12V rail to handle your processor, 2 GTX 580s and your fans.

Draw from the wall for me has never exceeded 780W with the power supply listed in my signature. This means my system was actually using (worst case scenario of 80% efficiency at that load level) 624W of power with 2 580s running in the high 90%s load (as measured by GPU-Z) and all 8 threads processing Battlefield Bad Company 2 info (yes it will use all of your threads). This is consistent with power consumption measurements during Furmark for most 580 SLI reviews.

Now, me just being me, I would advise an 850W for a two card system to have some built in headroom:
