GA x79-ud3, wont resume from sleep when booted in RAID

I bought a new rig, and everything seemed to be going great and i was about to start overclocking it, but i found that whenever i suspended my computer in any state of sleep- it would appear to resume and show me the log on screen for about thirty seconds, and then BSOD with error 0x000000f4 "process of thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated." if during that thirty seconds where it seems like everything is OK- if i log in to windows, the busy cursor comes up on a new background (not yet the desktop), and then it will BSOD as if no difference.

After messing around with many variables and reinstalls it appears that the one variable that is able to change things is that if i boot the intel chipset in ahci rather than raid- it will work. I haven't found anything else that will get it to work. Why not just boot in AHCI? i use 1 drive for the system, but i have a raid array of 2 hardrives where i keep all my personal files/photos etc.. and am not willing to go without raid redundancy. below is my new rig and what other variables have not had an effect effect.

-Installing windows in UEFI v.s. regular bios- no difference
-Using old HDD rather than SSD in both UEFI v.s. old bios-- no difference, and with all other HD's disconnected v.s. not.
-Upgrading windows completely-- no difference
-upgrading video card completely-- no difference
-uprgading x79 chipset to most recent driver-- no difference
-using most recent bios flash (f7)
-have not made any attempt to OC yet. all stuff running at or below stock

I have a similar setup with similar issue, brand new build.
When coming back from sleep the system speaker beeps repeatly and goes into a shutdown/startup loop every 10 seconds with no display.

I started with newer Bios version F8

Even if the two hardrives i keep in raid array are both disconnected- it makes no difference. I haven't switched them to other ports- as i dont see what difference it would make if they are in 1 port v.s. another if when they aren't even connected the problem persists.

I also have the problem you mentioned (jdroflet), that after it reboots when it crashed it gets into this 10 second cycle where it repeatedly reboots with different beeps. I found a website that went over the basics of how to interpret those beeps- but life got busy and i didn't ever get around to looking into it more.

I tried upsteping the voltage on my memory with no effect.

Went into the registry and changed the iastorV start to a 0. Not a fix, though it did seem different -- less likely to progress to a BSOD and instead-- after the log on screen presents and i sign in the screen just sits there with the windows busy circle icon which just keeps going and going. One time after trying to log in after resuming it showed an error sign and said "remote procedure call failed" and BSOD'd

The regular dump file skipped over the entire episode- i'm gonna see if i can mess with the dump setting so it will record.

Try uninstalling Intel Rapid Storage Technology, it's optional and not required. Then test again.

The MOBO DVD typically has older drivers. If you have something that looks like below then try uninstalling Intel RST:

Alright, I 'assumed' that you installed the RAID properly from the beginning i.e. when you installed Windows you used F6 drivers, it seems you did not. 'IF' you installed as AHCI and after-the-fact changed or i.e. changed to RAID then the MBR (Master Boot Record) will become corrupted, and sure loads of BSODs, etc.

The 'Test' if Intel RSTE drivers are installed properly - BIOS change Intel SATA -> RAID and boot; the resulting BSOD is a tell tale sign you installed Windows 7 improperly and the very old basic (slower) Windows default AHCI driver is installed. Fix = Re-install the OS.

* Other X79's, My experiences with RAID + X79 are on ASUS, and looking at your download page - http://www.gigabyte.com/products/p [...] id=4050#dl you have a similar F6 driver set; Windows 7 SP1 lacks the X79 chipset RAID driver package.

* ASUS only, if you plan on using SSD Caching then Intel SATA -> AHCI and both the boot HDD and SSD Cache drive must be on 'NON Intel SATA ports' e.g. Marvell, ASMedia, etc; then install Windows normally none of the following pertains to you.

The fix is a PITA, you'll have to back-up all of your data and start from scratch including reformatting your drives to avoid MBR or GPT corruption, and if you have an SSD then it's best to Secure Erase it before installing the OS to insure optimal performance i.e. 'Factory State.' There is to my knowledge no other way.

There are (2) choices: MBR which is more compatible but if any of the HDD's are 2TB or larger then use GPT.

IMO I strongly advise you to create a custom MBR or GPT Flash Drive installer and in addition add the Intel RST driver "SATA RAID Driver (For system to read from floppy diskette during Windows installation)" uncompressed (unzipped) to the Flash Drive in a Folder called 'RAID' in the top directory. Problems have occurred using the DVD + Flash drive. Next, when requested by the Windows installer for the RAID driver open the folder 'RAID' and select the appropriate, I assume, 64-bit drivers and you'll be using the iaStorA.inf.

Intel Rapid Storage Technology enterprise drivers:
* Options, if your OEM doesn't offer the latest Intel RSTE drivers:
Download "Intel SATA Preinstall driver (For AHCI / RAID Mode)" F6 Driver -> http://www.gigabyte.com/products/p [...] id=4050#dl and unzip folder.

You should able to use the latest Intel RST Enterprise drivers (Window and F6) driver package:

/ASUS and X79's uses Intel RST Enterprise.

** Safest option, especially if your OEM does offer the latest Intel RSTE drivers:
ASUS & perhaps others - as of the (edit date) ASUS seems to have updated their Intel Rapid Storage Technology enterprise driver software V3.0.0.xxxx (e.g. 3011) package so use ASUS drivers rather than accidentally using the wrong drivers.

Important note: I strongly recommend setting SATA -> RAID even if you plan to change to AHCI later. This completely avoids Windows from injecting wrong drivers during OS installations and that the procedure is followed properly.

Important note: I strongly recommend not loading the drivers from (2) different sources this is a KNOWN issue (e.g. Windows DVD + Flash Drive for drivers only). The problem 'might' be fixed if you reinsert the USB back where it was during the install, but to me this is a very bad way to correct a problem creating a dependency.

E. Save and Exit = Yes

2. Before Re-Installing:
A. Shutdown and physically unplug ALL SATA cables to any non-boot drives
B. SSD ONLY (optional but recommended) - SSD Secure Erase - http://blog.ocztechnology.com/?p=367 ; your SSD may have it's own tools e.g. Samsung offers 'Magician'.

3. Installing: Press F8 and Boot from USB, select 'Install now ->'
A. Select Custom (Advanced)

Meaning that Windows has properly installed. Random Shutdowns are different from a BSOD. If in the Event Manager [+] Critical is only 41/63's then that's a faulty MOBO or RAM. Try (1) stick per the manual.

Q - What exact BSOD's are you getting?

An 'F4' without the additional information listed in the Event Manager is more less meaningless. I get you have a Sleep issue and it's a vanilla 'F4', but I also get that 9/10 you didn't re-install/install Windows 7 properly and 9/10 the MBR is corrupted; test by changing the BIOS to RAID and reboot and if BSOD then there no magical answer. Further, if you didn't follow the (F6) fix then that too adds one of countless possibilities.

'F4 Errors' Generic fixes:
1. Disable Sleep and Hibernation (If BTW you followed some lame SSD guide and already Disabled Hibernation -- then Duh, Hybrid Sleep requires it); Manually delete if present the 'hiberfil.sys' file. The turn-on both.
2. Update ALL drivers to the latest per Gigabyte (Test). Failure, then go to Intel and use the (Run Intel Driver Update Utility) http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx?lang=eng and update the drivers. Ditto with any HW component e.g. GPU, Add-on, USB, Printers, etc.
3. Sleep Diagnostics (see below)
4. Run MSCONFIG and select Diagnostic, reboot and Sleep using the Windows Key like Restart.
5. Disconnect ALL peripherals and start Disabling Sleep items like NIC's Power Management.
6. BIOS, use the latest.

I know that if you improperly installed the OS that Sleep/Resume fails. I screwed-up once and completely forgot about the (F6) driver install which corrupts the MBR; same (my fault) errors. Then re-installed the OS and it's fine, but no guarantees; GA's are habitual S3+S4 problems.

First lesson, never install more than the OS + required drivers until you know the PC is bug free.

Changing any of the S-States in the BIOS will only pooch Hybrid Sleep.

^Enough >DDR3-1600 kits run poorly (aka throw error) when not running @ Rated frequency. The BIOS, often on ASUS, misreads 'SPD' information an you get 'OC Failed' from the BIOS. So yes, with one (1) kit if possible use XMP. Also, by default the SB-E will turbo 200MHz under with Defaults i.e. DDR3-1333.

Windows on LGA 2011 'should' be installed as I posted above.
