Hello,
I own a piece of industrial equipment (a beta gauge, which measures the thickness of materials on the fly by passing radiation through them) and I am told that I could get it to work by finding a Windows 98 motherboard with 2 ISA (?) slots. Anybody?

motherboards aren't determined by the OS... but I'm guessing whoever suggested this meant an older mobo, as ISA isn't seen much anymore.. I would suggest looking for an industrial mobo or a "long life mobo" and ensure that they have ISA slots... then confirm the drivers necessary for the device and what operating systems are supported

ok few pieces of info then what i would buy.
windows 98 is just an operating system, you need a motherboard that supports components good enough for it, but there arent really windows 98 motherboards.
right now the slot to have is PCI Express before that was AGP(which was generally only used for graphics) before that was PCI and finally before that was ISA. they are long and black. The 8-bit slot had 62 pins. The 16-bit slot had an additional 36 pins.

its too expensive now a days to get the motherboard, processor and ram seperately, i found a lot of listings where people sell them all together and working.
all you will need is a PCI graphics card (not PCI-E), hard drive, case and power supply to make it work. ask friends and family for an old win 98 disk and key. someone might have one.

i like this one the most.

This was very helpful the equipment guy says it has to be the "mini AT form factor". (I get the impression the equipment guy maybe isn't looking as hard as he might because he wants to sell me an upgrade on the machine; I mean, I have no business looking for a mobo). Any chance you could point me to the same thing in the "mini At form"? If you find me something that works I'll make it worth your time.

I showed these links to the equipment guy and he says they won't fit into the "cage", whatever that is. But now he has found an old mobo at his place and he's going to test it today, so at least I got him off the dime. I appreciate your efforts very much, this forum is great, thanks.
