I was thinking about getting a supermicro server motherboard for my one room efficiency apartment. Aside from the CPU, do these motherboards run hotter than a normal desktop motherboard? I would like to to keep the fan noise low as possible.

They shouldn't, but why a server motherboard? Are you building a workstation? Will you be installing an efficient CPU and low-voltage memory?
