[Solved] MB & CPU Upgrade -- Do I need to reinstall OS?

Forum Motherboards & Memory : Chipsets & Bios [Solved] MB & CPU Upgrade -- Do I need to reinstall OS?

Just upgraded my hardware from

Intel Dual Core, ASRock G-31 motherboard, 1 GB DDR2 RAM, 320 GB Hard drive

to

Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel DG41WV motherboard, 2 GB DDR3 RAM, 320 GB + 500 GB Hard drives

The system booted up fine after I chose "start windows normally" option. Uninstalled ASRock utilities and installed intel driver DVD that came with the motherboard.

Now everything looks and works fine -- things work much faster than I'm used to. The only issue is, there are a two beeps when the system boots (spaced by about 5-8 seconds) and that the system doesn't recognise the new 500 GB hard drive.

My question is, is it still recommended to re-install the OS (I have Windows 7 ultimate).

Also, what do I need to do so that the new hard drive shows up?

Thanks!

In Win 7, click on the Window button at the bottom left (used to be called the start button). In the 'Search programs and files' box, type 'disk management'.

Then choose the 'Create and Format...' option from the list.

Do you see the 500GB disk with unallocated space here?

Thanks Ubercake. I created the partitions and formatted the drive.

I'd still like to know if I should reinstall the OS.

You don't need to if everything's running OK.

As for the beeps, check this out:

Seems it's normal for that motherboard.

No, you do not need to reinstall the operating system. As long as the system boots to the operating system, it's not necessary to boot into it.

There can sometimes be issues with the system not booting due to the OS trying to use the old motherboard chipset drivers with the new motherboard and in that case some people reinstall, but since you're able to get into the OS that is clearly not happening.

Not sure what's going on with the beeps...enjoy the system!

Thanks fullofzen. There was some screen resolution issue the first time I booted but after I fixed it, I haven't had any issue. As I said, removing old drivers and installing new ones helped.

As to the beeps, I also read it was normal behaviour for this MB but after updating to the latest bios, they disappeared. So it's all good now.

I'm so glad I don't have to do a complete reinstall :)

You didn't really change the chipset, so you didn't need to reload the OS. If you did it the way you did but changed from an Intel chipset to an AMD, then you would have had issues.
