I am setting up a Hyper-V virtual server to play with at home.

When I enable VT-d in the BIOS my computer takes 8 minutes to complete
POST (to get to the BIOS summary page). When I disable VT-d the computer boots within a few seconds.

My motherboard and CPU support VT-d according to the specs, and I have the latest BIOS update. What should I do?

Thanks,
JD

My setup:
--------------------
- Supermicro X7SBL-LN2 motherboard BIOS v1.2a
- 8GB of Kingston ECC RAM DDR2 800 (KVR800D2E6K2/4G)
- Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 CPU (VT-d compatible per Intel)

Welcome to Tom's Forum! :)

Supermicro X7SBL-LN2 http://www.supermicro.com/products [...] BL-LN2.cfm
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=38512

Right-off the bat the Q8400 is NOT compatible with ECC RAM; you need a Xeon CPU or non-ECC RAM. So I assume the combination of ECC + Virtualization is causing the 'problems.'

+1

Get a Xeon if you want ECC.

Many thanks to Jaquith and Mdsiu for pointing out my mistake.

I took pains to make sure that the Intel CPU and Kingston RAM were compatible with the motherboard. It never occured to me that some CPU's don't support ECC RAM!

Thanks again for your help, Tom's Forum is a great resource! :)
