Disk-writing 'whirring' sounds...

Forum Homebuilt Systems : New Build Disk-writing 'whirring' sounds...

Hello, I recently built a PC and am currently hearing sounds that are akin to the PC "working". It's a faint whirring/clicking sound, I assume it's from the HDD. The only peculiar thing is that it is only heard if I turn my audio on. If it is on mute, then I hear nothing...What could it be?

What are your specs? We can't really do much without them...

I apologize, I'm waiting on newegg to update so that I can make my system viewable to the public. However, here are the relevant parts.

mobo: ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

cpu: Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80601920 - Retail

hd: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

monitor: SAMSUNG T240HD Rose-Black 24" 5ms HDMI Widescreen HDTV Monitor - Retail

...Right now, I suspect that it is related to something along the interaction between the Realtek HD Audio and the monitor speakers. I have a USB 7.1 headset, and the whirring is never present when I use the headset. When I output the audio to the monitors, I hear the whirring. If I MUTE it, I no longer hear it. Also, when I play World of Warcraft and have it as my focus/foreground, I also hear a humming sound [different from the computer being busy sound] from the monitor output, but not from the USB headset.

I'd say it's either the monitor's speakers or the port you're using.

Is this normal behavior then? I'm using the standard stereo line-in/out ports.

I doubt it's normal. I'm saying that's where the problem is most likely to be found. Do you have another output to try to test the HDMI port (I'm assuming that's what your using)?

For video I'm using DVI and for audio I'm using the 2-channel stereo output.

I suppose it is of noting that I do not have an internal/external sound card, just using the sound provided by the motherboard.

Hi Exotech,

I've come across a similar problem before. A few questions first. Are your speaker wires close to other wires? Or are those speaker wires close to your PC? If so EM interference from other devices (such has a HDD) can interfere with your sound.
If you could move those speaker wires away from your computer and make sure they aren't close to other ones that would probably help (hopefully). Also what you could try is putting fabrics softener (such as bounce, those little rectangle pieces that look like kleenex) under your monitor. This will actually help with static electricty too (which may also be related to your problem).

Also you may want to do a google search for your speaker monitors as sometimes there may be a manufacturers defect or problem.

One last thing is you may want to use some shielded speaker cable - it may not work so try this as a last resort.

Hope this helps.
