I built my current computer 10+yrs ago and I think it's time for a rebuild. The computer is mostly used for internet browsing, streaming video, working with spreadsheets, graphics and cad programs, music and some gaming.
I'm going to reuse my DVD/CD drive, mouse, keyboard and monitor(HDMI), but that's probably it from the old unit.
I would like to keep it under $800.00 if possible(some flex with that).Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Thinking about staying with Windows XP Pro. Any suggestions?

Any idea about anything you want?
processor? AMD or intel?
How good of a graphics card are you looking for?
when you say "some gaming" what type of games are you speaking of?

I'm pretty wide open right now. A friend suggested the following to get me started.

I'm not really stuck on a certain brand. I'm just looking for something stable that runs good especially with graphics programs and streaming video. Thanks for your help.

All looked okay, very nice graphics card choice, 5770 would even fit your needs, and its 200$ less.. unles your planning on playing games max settings and want better fps and all that, then go with the 5870. But other than that, i would go with a full size motherboard, not a micro.

Good configuration, but isn't in the range price.

Saint is definitely right, that's out of your price range. Buy a 500GB Samsung Spinpoint, they have very good reviews. Get a full size motherboard. Probably go with a Radeon HD 5770 Graphics card instead of a 5870... You wont need the 5870 since you said you aren't really making a gaming machine.

At this point, there is no reason to stick with Windows XP unless you are running specific version of software which are incompatible with Windows Vista/7. (Photoshop 5, etc). Unless of course you already have a copy of XP and don't want to have to buy another.

Thanks for the help. I think I'm going to try this set up.
CPU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] &x=11&y=34
Don't know the difference between the two.

MOBO- http://www.newegg.com/Product/NewP [...] -_-Product

GPU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/NewP [...] %201GB%201

RAM- http://www.newegg.com/Product/NewP [...] -_-Product

HDD- http://www.newegg.com/Product/NewP [...] 0GB%207200

PSU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/NewP [...] 0Power%20A

Case- http://www.newegg.com/Product/NewP [...] 6811103011

What do you think? Is this going to work together?
Yes I have a copy of Windows XP so I would like to stay with that for now.
Again, thanks for the help and let me know what you think.
Does it matter which CPU I use?

Get the 500GB Samsung F3 Spinpoint instead of the Western digital. Spin point is faster

See this, the difference is the voltage and the revision, the GMBOX is more new that the GIBOX

I would change the HDD for the Spinpoint F3 500GB, $54.99. Same price, better performance.

Also, the RAM have a CL9 that is high, you can try this, is a little more expensive, but much better.

The other components are fine.
