Hello, when trying to backup my files, after inserting my usb, I'm informed that windows need a dvd/cd or usb to be inserted to continue.

What OS are you using?
Connect to the net and let it update the drivers for the new found USB device. If the device or a USB controller onboard has not got corrupted or blown you should not have a problem.
