Hello,
I'm planning on upgrading my hard drive. Right now i have a 500 gig hdd with 7200rpm. I was planning on getting a new motherbaord as well (ASRock 970 EXTREME3 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard) because my current one does not support Sata III. For the SSD im thinking of getting two SAMSUNG 830 Series MZ-7PC064D/AM 2.5" 64GB and running them in raid 0. However im new to ssd and raid so im not sure if this set up will work out. For the processor i have a amd phenom II X4 965 (3.4GHz). My gaphics card is a Radeon 5850 toxic edition and i have 4 gigs of ddr3 (1600). Im not sure if a need a raid controller for this set up and if i do can you guys recomend me a budget raid controller?

As far as I am aware most if not all modern motherboards come with RAID controllers built in and the only physical equiptment you need is the drives and sata cable?

Correct me if I am wrong as I am fairly new to this also :pt1cable:

You probably don't need a RAID controller card, look at the motherboard specifications. Two SSDs in RAID 0 on the motherboard RAID controller should work fine. If you will be installing your OS on them you will need to put the driver for your motherboard RAID controller on a USB flash drive so you can give the driver to your OS setup program. You must of course first set up the RAID array using your motherboard firmware. Thus, you should probably load up the latest BIOS for your motherboard.

Some will tell you that it's best to not use SDDs for RAID because right now trim won't work for drives in a RAID array. Some will tell you that the drive's garbage collection will do fine. I am not knowledgeable enough to say, so you must do some research on that. It won't stop me when I get ready to do it because I'm all about making drive images so I can change things up. So regardless of what you decide to do, you can always make a drive image of your OS Drive, change whatever you want to change, and place the OS drive image back onto whatever you want.
