One IDE port can carry two devices, what do you have already connected?

unplug the sata drive.
plug in the ide (pata) drive with the correct ide ribbon cable.
make sure bios is set to use ide mode and that it sees your ide HD.
install windows from your DVD or image.

IDE connector only has IDE mode!

When the computer is booting get to the bios. Maybe del or f8 or f10 depending on the board.
Make sure the IDE is enabled. All bios menus are different but there should be an option to turn the Sata on or off and the IDE on or off. Make sure it is on and that the bios can see your HD.
