Has anyone built a system like this one?
http://technomaniac.comze.com/?p=161
If so, do you mind posting what benchmarks you get?
Id honestly spend the extra 40/50 bucks and get this mobo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813131402
With this RAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820231275
Means DDR2 is at the end of its life. This leaves you with a far better upgrade path, for only 70ish more.
With this you can you reuse the MOBO at somepoint, even possibly the ram too. Depends on how long you use it for!
Thanks for your input Truhis, those are some nice components. I was trying to keep the price under $600. But if I make a guide for a $700 I might consider those items
Thanks again for commenting
Hey everyone who got here looking for a good $600 gaming rig, check out this build for $700 (only $619.93 after mail in rebates). It has a Radeon HD 4890 1GB so it should be a nice improvement over the $600 rig I made previously. Check it out in it's entirety at: http://technomaniac.comze.com/

wrong.
take the same hd and case from your build.
add the following:
cpu+mem: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Comb [...] mbo.326765 245.98$ before rebates, 235.98$ after.
mb: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813128392 74.99$ after discount, 64.99 after rebates.
psu+gpu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Comb [...] mbo.329720 239.98$ after discounts, 199.98 after rebates.
total 655.93$ before rebates, 595.93$ after.
why it it better?
your build's cpu is 940BE, mine is 955BE.
your build's mb is am2, mine is am3 including usb 3.0.
your build's ram is ddr2 1066, mine is ddr3 1333.
the psu is the same.
your build's gpu is 4890, mine is the 5770.
sorry but that build isn't that good.

Great alternative build daggs! I appreciate your input. I will probably use your configuration for my next build. The only thing I don't agree with is that you changed the 4890 for a 5770. A 5770 is a great card, but a 4890 will give you more frames per second:
http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] 73-15.html
Even overclocked the 5770 doesn't touch the 4890. Maybe your confusing the 4890 with the 4870?
Also a 940BE isn't a 955BE, but it's only a small step down when it comes to gaming:
http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] 520-7.html
Anyways, I like your combo I actually made one quite similar to it:

you've got a point there but still the diff between performance and price doesn't justify the 4890.
in regards to the cpu, it doesn't matter, 955 outperformes he 940 and the combo worth it.

I totally agree. Sometimes you get a chunk of change and you only have so much money to work with. And in order to get a better video card you have to sacrifice something. That's the name of the game. Trying to get the most balanced system for your dollar.
Would you have to change any other parts to use this MOBO:

For crossfire upgrade in the future.

Well you wouldnt be able to use Intel with that MOBO, just AMD. But that is a good thing for a low budget imo

I'm a bit confused. Who said anything about intel?
An Amd X3, ddr3, more affordable MB and more case/PS makes a case for me as a $600 system cause if leave me more money more GPUs ie. 5850.
X3 is 75
MB is 60 with a combo at newegg.
Antec 300/430watt is 97
A-data 4gb is 98
500gb hd is 55
Hd5850 is 270
Total is 650, works for me, that is also before rebates.
jobieadobe wrote : I'm a bit confused. Who said anything about intel?
Sorry i think im getting threads mixed up lol. Was trying to reply to someone who insisted on getting an intel when he didnt have the budget for it a few days ago.
lol it's cool. I agree, AMD owns the budget market right now.

Nice build. I might have to build a guide around a 5950 next
5950? you mean 5850? Why would anyone want to build a comp for $600 anyway? Take the $600 add $200 and get a 5970. Now you're talking. Throw in another one for crossfire, grab a X58 MObo, an i7 920 WC it, OC to 4.2GHZ and you should be pretty happy. Then you realize your screen is too small. So you need to get 3 3008WFPs and setup Eyefinity. Now you can enjoy a few games
Oh, btw. I forgot to add that you will probably need a 1200W PC Power and Cooling PSU. Which you can find at your local Micro Center for $415 (if you have to work, you might find a buddy that can pick it up for you for $50)

not everyone can afford a i7-920 or a 800$ budget computer.
wc is for experts, not for the average user...
you can enjoy games with a phenom II 955/i5-750 with a ati5770 without any problems and even oc it with air hsf.

why would anyone need a 1200 unless you need it for the wc...
infact, wc is for amateurs... go for LN2... if a phenom II got to 6ghz, think what an i7 will do.
you need a 1200W for the 3 5870s
microterf wrote : you need a 1200W for the 3 5870s
for that he will need a nvidia based chipset mb which are complete crap... it doesn't worth while imho.
better get two 5870x2 which will destroy almost any sli present.
lol I'm pretty sure microterf is joking. But I totally agree with the 4890 over the 5770. The 5770 down right sucks compared to the 4890.
For the first build your PSU is great, but it's pretty expensive for what it is. You can get the Antec BP550 for $65 or the Antec earthwatts 650 for $75 + it has some combos on the HD 5770 which would save $20 too.
Just would like to say, very very nice PC you own there microterf. I bet you could get atleast $30 for that PC if you sell it as a antique

No I meant 5950 it's a top secret project by Nvidea. It's 23.8x faster than a 250. It uses quantum physics and is able to calculate pie in 1 half a second. It will be released in 2895. Yeah I meant 5850, lol.
Daggs, there is no 5870x2. There is a 5970. That has 2 5870 cores downclocked to 750 Mhz. The problem is 4 GPUs will actually perform WORSE than 3 GPUs in most games because of the scaling and overhead.

Haha I just noticed this post! Yeah i will have to pick up one. Just noticed your system specs as well lol. How many fps do you get running Crysis 640x480?
Crysis is garbage, I mean seriously, I get .0321 fps running crysis, VERY poorly written engine. I know there are some faster computers out there than my Pentium II, but I paid $6K for this 12 years ago, and I allow myself $300 a year so it's got a few more years left in it. What really shines though is DOOM II. You guys play that? It ROCKS!! I have Need For Speed 2 installed, but haven't really played it much.

Hahaha Doom II ! Do you got that rig water cooled and overclocked?

ok, can you provide links to that claim?
daggs wrote : ok, can you provide links to that claim?

Here is a link to that claim. 5970s. show me 5870x2s and prove me wrong if you don't believe me (although it's 725MHZ not 750 as I sated earlier)
| microterf wrote : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] ption=5970

like you've said, the 5970 is a 5870x2 so there is no debate there, I'll take a look on the links
that link isn't what I've been asking for, I want to a link that supports your claim that 4 gpus perform worst then 3 gpus
microterf wrote : just google it
googled it, not much convincing to support your claim.
but the is a possibility that I've missed something
I'll check later for you Daggs. I know I found a few before, that's why I added a 4870 to my 4870x2 instead of another x2. Running 3 5870s now

Where did you find a 5850 for $270, newegg?
Hey just made another under $700 build! Best one yet! http://technomaniac.comze.com/?p=335
jobie, I want the best build for under $5000. Can you do that.
microterf wrote : jobie, I want the best build for under $5000. Can you do that.
You really want me to? It would take me a while but I could do it. I just don't want to go to all the trouble and your just screwing with me.
Yes I really want you to
