Hi. I'm trying to find a good NAS adapter. Right now I'm trying out the PogoplugPro, and it seems to work ok. But it includes only usb 2.0 ports. So here's my question.

Assuming I'm using a usb 3.0 external hard drive, will I notice a big difference in transfer speeds if I'm using a usb 3.0 NAS adapter over a 2.0 adapter?
I know that usb 3.0 is generally quite a bit faster, but I'm just wondering if the fact that data will be transferred over the network will "bottleneck" the actual speed. Will the network device be the bottle neck, making usb 3.0 pretty much useless?

I should point out that I'm primarily interested in it's use over the LOCAL network.

These are the two devices I've considered so far. Please let me know if there is a better one for comparable price.

1) PogoplugPro: http://reviews.cnet.com/networking [...] 95360.html

2) Addonics NAS adapter 3.0: http://www.addonics.com/products/nas30u2.php

Thank you for your thoughts.

You've hit the nail on the head about the network being the bottleneck. Wikipedia states "The theoretical maximum data rate in USB 2.0 is 480 Mbit/s." The nominal rate for 100BaseT is 100 Mbit/s. If you have an end-to-ent gigabit network in your home (all machines and switches), you may benefit from USB 3.0.

Thanks. I kinda figured that. I'm just gonna stick with the pogoplug. It seems to work fine, and fast enough for my needs.

Cheers.
