Forum Storage : NAS/RAID Are there any controller that support 1) FreeNAS & 2) >3TB drives?

I've been looking at the Supermicro AOC-USAS2-L8I... I own its predecessor and it runs great on my FreeNAS 0.7 system; however, for my next build I want to use 3TB drives.

Are there any controller under $200 that support 3TB drives & FreeNAS 8.0?

I'd really appreciate any insight here; as well as what you all think may be some good decisions for my next server.

Thanks and... hi everyone! (first post). :P

Welcome.

The newer Adaptec cards support 3Tb drives and FreeNAS 8, the 6405E is right around 200 and the 6805E just a bit over.

I used a 6805 with 8 x 3Tb Hitachi 7200 rpm Deskstars RAID 6 on an ASUS Z68 board with no issues -- supposedly Adaptec 6XXX cards don't like UEFI but I did not find that an issue, although that particular card is well out of the price range you seek.

Thanks for that!

I am particularly looking for one that can support 8 drives.
Is this the one you have?

Any suggestions for motherboard & RAM?

I was thinking this RAM:

with this motherboard:

Would a newer Supermicro be more appropriate?

I'm using this all in a Fractal XL case. I really appreciate the help!

I would recommend the motherboard I used (since I know it works well with the card -- ASUS Z68 and non-ECC memory like THIS.

You don't need too much CPU, a i3-2105 is more than enough and you won't need a graphics card.

I used the non-E 6805, but they are pretty much the same other than the RAID 5/6 availability that raises the price.

edit: and it is best to go with the CARD VERSION that also has two sas to 4 sata adapter cables, as they cost much more to buy later unless you have some already.

I use SPM393 and SPM394 for FreeNAS. Here is the 40TB NAS we have about 2yrs now...

Each SAS/SATA port can have handle 5x drives...

There is no driver or software needed, so upgrade or update OS has no affect on the RAID
