Okay, so I have an HP Pavilion dv6810us. I just recently for christmas got a new sager laptop and I was going to format and install windows 7 on the HP and give that laptop to a sibling. As I was attempting to boot the windows 7 disc I noticed that it wasn't booting. I then went into windows vista (which is what it has on it now) and tried so generic dvd's and none of them worked.
When I put a dvd into the drive I can hear it spinning. The drive shows up in my computer, the bios, and the device manager. When I'm in the bios I can even switch it around in the boot order, but it never actually reads any cd to actually boot from. I've done so googling today and a lot of other people with the dv6000 had the same issue. Some people said running this "cd fixer" which they gave a download link to worked for them, which apparently just clears some registry or something. I ran that and it didn't do anything. Another person said they simply removed the drive from the laptop and blew out a bunch of dust that had accumulated. I tried that too, but it was pretty clean, blew it out anyway, but still doesn't work. I've searched for new drivers through the device manager, but it said everything was up to date and working properly. Essentially, in all areas it looks like I have a functioning dvd drive, except that it doesn't read anything.
I did get this laptop in 2008. Perhaps the drive is just at the end of its life?
If it helps at all this is the dvd drive listed in the device manager: KVS YB0XUB09A3 SCSI CdRom Device
Any ideas or is it just most likely the drive is past its time?
