Hard disk problem...

You need to replace it with a new one, reinstall OS and programs and drivers
and transfer back the data off the old one..

What Hellboy said.

Unless you were trying to run something from a CD/DVD at the time the error happened... however I suspect it's as per the first answer.

Could be worth slaving it into another box to run Checkdisk with the /r switch to repair. The OP is going to have to do this sooner or later for data recovery if nothing else. Dare I say a Hirens BootCD with MiniXP would do the trick as well.

Do not waste your time on this.

Disk error means it has a bad sector which it is a hard disk which is unreliable to use.

chkdsk will not solve this problem, full stop.

its like sticking rubbers to a bald tyre.

if you want to keep your machine working well, quick and reliable - replace the hard disk

I would go with Saga Lout and run "chkdsk /r" before junking it, if you are willing to tinker a bit, you might save $$$ and be able to recover any data you cant afford to lose.

I get that error fairly frequently on drives in work and "chkdsk /r" gets them operational and loading into windows again.

However, I would not consider the drives to be reliable enough after seeing that problem to return them to a customer, but the drives continue to work perfectly fine in PCs in work where they are not running "mission critical" apps or storing priceless data.

for the sake of 40 - 50 quid is this worth all this agro....

if you do decide to go against the sensible grain op go for Western Digital... Best drives imho

have installed a few momentus xt's recently, quite like them, although I only had 5400's before.

use chkdsk for data recovery only, not for getting it working again, buy the new hdd before you do it, so you won't be tempted to 'manage'and 'just be careful' for a while.

if you short of ££ for the moment, run manufacturers diagnostic software, can sometimes extend the life by rerouting access to dodgy sectors out to the spares that most drives have, but keep backups.

Mindful of an e-mail I had the other day from Bluepoint - my regular supplier - that 2Tb HDDs are now under sixty quid, it may not be worth bothering too much

all this and its back to what i said and if you read what the op said its a laptop

they have only just released 1tb laptop hard disks

A quick reread, dump the drive and get another new one, as its not being detected correctly during post and causing a hang.

So after all this rambling do we conclude that my orgional comment is correct.

Replace the hard disk...

Its a laptop.

Laptop hard disk are more prone to failure than desktop.

Do you want to risk loosing any further data.
