Installing a SSD with a current non-SSD RAID

Forum Storage : SSD Installing a SSD with a current non-SSD RAID

I am currently Running a RAID 1 (mirror) with 2 750 GB Caviar Black Drives. I would like to keep the rAID for my data, but install a high end SSD for the operating system and programs. What is the best way to do this? Can I remove the OS and programs from the RAID? Do I just install the SSD, map the RAID drive and change the boot order? What is the best way to do this?

Dang! No one answered your question. I want to do a similar thing but use an old laptop drive until I can afford an SSD.

Did you ever find a solution?

From what I've found so far it looks like the only method is to:
1. Break the RAID
2. Format one of the drives
3. Move the data to the formatted drive
4. Install the SSD and do a fresh install of the OS and programs to the SSD
5. Format the other RAID drive
6. Rebuild the RAID array
I think that covers it.

I don't think you can just clone the OS and program part of your RAID to the SSD. Then you would need to remove the OS and programs from the RAID drives without affecting the data. I'm thinking that the best way to do it is a good back up of the data on the RAID and then start with a fresh install of the OS and programs. Quite a hassle since you also have to do all the updates again.
