Should I adjust my Overclock?

Forum Overclocking : CPUs Should I adjust my Overclock?

Word :    Username :

Hello, so I just recently overclocked my i5 2500k to 4.5ghz. I left all the voltages on auto and booted into windows. I then started to run prime95 to stress my cpu. I let it run for 5 /12 hours and no problems detected But I'm a little concerned/unsure. The only problem I noticed was during the prime95 test all my cores were very hot. Running between 67-79(one core it 80) degrees Celsius. I'm using the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 as my heatsink. So I did a test. I went to play BF3 and my overclock kicked in right away, the turbo boost went to 4.5ghz The game wasn't using 100%, rather just under 60% of my cpu. The temps were fine while playing BF3. They never went over 60 degrees. So my question is. Should I adjust my clock and maybe try a lower vcore because prime95 showed hot temps under full stress? Or can I leave it at what it is because in a real scenario(Playing games like BF3) my temps were great. any thoughts?

Prime95 runs the CPU very hot because it is very intensive. Temp seem great! Although, what is your max Vcore?

Okay so I left all the voltages on auto. When I run prime95 or even just BF3 my CPU turbo boost to 4.5ghz exactly how i wanted it and it shows the vcore at 1.34 to 1.35 volts. I've been thinking...maybe if I took it off auto I could lower the vcore to maybe 1.28v or 1.30v. I see a lot of people run 4.5ghz+ at those voltages. Would that be a smart move? Would that also show a good chunk of temperature reduction?

Yeah, I run mine at those voltages too, just I use offset. You may be able to get it lower and if you do, it may lower temps a little.

Okay. What is offsetting?

It allows your machine to hit a certain voltage, but then it drops down. So, my offset allows me to hit somewhere around 1.36v i believe, but still goes down to around 1v when in power saving mode.

Oh. Is my computer doing that be default? Because when my cpu isn't running at 4.5ghz it's vcore drops to below 1.00. Like right now it's running at 1.6ghz and the vcore is at 0.960v. That's what my cpu is at idle but it changes depending on w/e im doing on my pc at any given time. Of course playing intense games like BF3 it shoots up to 4.5ghz(well i clocked it down to 4.4 actually)

Yes, auto voltage will also do that, just it generally overvolts it under load. It is Intel SpeedStep. It clocks the CPU down in clock and lowers its voltage to reduce heat, noise, and power consumption. You are fine. ;)

ok cool. So then I should just leave my vcore at auto? or should I still manually set it to say 1.30 or 1.28 depending of course if it's stable at those voltages.

Check this out.

A simple factory sealed water cpu cooler will take 5-10'C off your temps easily. Generally, the cooler the CPU the better. Here are some ideas:

I've considered watercooling. No money for one of those atm and I'm quite happy with my hyper 212 heatsink. Plus Im unsure of how to install it since I have fans on the top of my case. I don't wan't to block them.

Reply to scubasteve526

easy install. You mount the smaller ones to the rear exhaust where the normal 120-140mm fan is. But if you are happy with your 212, then I am happy for you too :)

Well I have the NZXT phantom and I always see those coolers mounted at the top of the case. In some kind of push pull config...idk

Reply to scubasteve526

You can mount on top also; basically almost anywhere that a 120mm fan goes for the smaller ones. But you reallyu want to pull cold air into the case if you can.

well my case has those 2 small fans on the side. Though they are blowing on the drive bays I feel that the air moves around into the case. The fan on the back and top pull air out

If you're happy, then I am happy too :)

But... you are probably stuck with those temps for that OC on an air cooler. I run 4.5 @1.35v and have 100% load temps around 60'C with my H100 on low fan speed. you could easily drop 5-10'C seriously probably more and then your cpu would then be happy too :)

I don't like fixed votlage as they will run whatever voltage you set it at through the chip even when it is running @ 1.6Ghz. :/

Go with offset. For 1.3v, go for around .05-.010v on offset. That will lower the voltage when not need also.

Reply to HostileDonut

I used both, but manually setting the vcore solidified my OC and I know what the max voltage is.

How do I set an offset? I'm using an MSI z68 GD55 mobo.

Go into the voltage settings and there should be something that says auto, manual/fixed, and offset voltage. Then you set it and that is it. Make sure voltages are not too high though. Pretty simple.
