Can a fan card replce GPU onboard fan?

Forum Overclocking : Heatsinks & Air Cooling Can a fan card replce GPU onboard fan?

So my 5670 graphics card fan is insanely loud and replacement fans or any type of fan controller doesn't seem to be compatible. Here's my graphics card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814127600

So will something like this be able to suffice for enough cooling if the GPU fan is removed? : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] %20PCL-201

My system is not overclocked, and I have to 140mm case fans and one 120mm case fan

Absolutely not,
Do not remove the fitted cooler unless you are:
1 fitting another one
2 putting a waterblock on it for watercooling
That link is for a slotfan, which will not cool your cards Gpu on its own,

you would of course have to figure out a way to mount it so the air was directed over your heatsnks on card now...by removing the fan and cover only but leaving the heatsink attached....since it would be 2 fans instead of the one you have now it may work ok....but the fan thats on there now is setup to get maximum airflow over the heatsinks where the fans you want to add will not be ...so short answer...maybe...maybe not...you would have to try to see and that will require modding your existing fan and shroud

One way to get extra air onto the gpu is have a fan mounted on the side of the case and blow air in.

I have just added one to my new case and it has dropped the temp by 5deg.

That slotfan might help direct air onto the GPU as well.

Just make sure the air that you are moving is cool. No point blowing warm air over your GPU.

^ Slotfans don't blow onto the card, they take air out of the case,
Op, have you tried using MSI Afterburner to adjust fan speed at all?

You'd be right there.

Sorry for the delay, the slot fan doesnt take air out if you looked at the image it very clearly blows at the graphics card. But... all I did was buy a small silent replacement fan and everything has worked fine through a bit of modding.

Also, MSI afterburner had no affect on fan speed at all :/

Sorry to hear that, glad you got sorted though and you are right ofc, the slotfan you linked is a purely directional unit, all the others I've used/seen have venting at the rear and are used as exhausts, I've never seen one like that before now so thanks for the added information

Don't think the directional slot fan will do much though. A side mounted fan might help do the trick if you remove the cards cover to reveal the heatsink below it (if you were dead set on removing the fan). But before you do anything like that I would manually adjust the fan speed. Or toss in a side mounted fan without removing the gpu fan and see what that does to the temps.

And take a can of compressed air and blow it in there, dust probably collected in there, just because you can't see it doesn't mean its not there.
