PSU?

I think my problem may be my PSU. When I overclock my cpu, I get restarts while gaming. I don't think my overclock is to aggressive +.06ghz. 2.4ghz to 3.0. I have my memory set to sli expert, unlinked, 1333mhz fsb, and 1066mhz ram,
5,5,5,15,2T timings manual, memory voltage set to 2.1V everything else is set to auto. I ran prime95 blend test for 2hrs. with no problems My CPU temp never went higher than 62c. If I don't overclock I have no problems. I really want to get to 3.0ghz. If it's my PSU than I have no problem getting a new one. I am no pro and I have been doing alot of research online trying to figure this out myself. I have a little money to fix this problem. My rig is older but still goes and games like a champ.

CPU: Q6600 GO
MOBO: Evga 780i
RAM: Gskill 4 gigs 2x2 1066mhz Pi Black
PSU: ABS Tagan BZ 900watt
CPU COOLER:Freezer Pro 7
GPU:Evga 9800 gtx ssc 65nm
OS:Vista 32bit

You have way more than enough PSU to OC your system. I would recommend you don't OC your memory and focus on your GPU and CPU. OCing memory often leads to unstable systems and the performance gains from OCed memory is minimal.

Given your situation, drop the memory to stock and see if the system stabilizes. Good luck!

I read in other forums that a restart from gaming is most likely a failing PSU! But I haven't read one that answered my question. When you say drop the memory to stock are you saying link and sync? My ram is 1066mhz and thats what it is set to. I am a noob when it comes to this but I am really interested in getting a stable 3.0ghz oc.

Go into your BIOS and change your memory from any manual config to AUTO. You are right, a failing PSU can cause similar issues (I don't think we are there yet).

How are your CPU and GPU temperatures?

You overclocked 600MHz so did you change the CPU's voltage any?

At 3GHz your vcore will need 1.275v.

Here is a video showing the settings you need at 3GHz. You may need to adjust voltage a small amount from the video as all CPU's are not the same. As coolgek said set your memory back to stock and just make the memory speed multipleir change in the video.

They are good, like I said I ran prime95 blend for 2 hours with no fail temps never went above 62c, and my gpu never gets above 56c when I game.

Overclocking is like testing for bad hardware. Switch a setting and test. I suggest you set your PC back to stock and test for a while in games. First make sure your system is stable at stock in what is crashing you. Try the settings in the video and test in game. Make sure the CPU can take the overclock on its own first. You have to find that each piece of hardware can take those settings. If the CPU only overclock doesn't crash you have limited your possible causes. Next only the motherboard while keeping the CPU and RAM near stock. Lastly do your RAM overclock.

Try looking at the minidumps using whocrashed. Could be a driver or in some cases Avast anti-virus can crash the OS kernel with games like a 0x7F UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP.

Ok, I set everything back to stock and no problem I play SC2 on medium and battlefield 3 on low (thats alls I can get with out hangs and lag) all night no problems, my kid plays Arkam City on high, no problem but as soon as I overclock I get about 20min to an hour before restart. I don't get a BSOD or anything stating why, only safemode. I dont know I tried everything I can think of. I ran prime95 blend for 2 hours with no problems. FRUSTRATED BADLY! Oh and my bios doesn't have MIT. I need to bring that q6600 up to 3.0 or it's useless. I know I should have no problems getting there with my set up. I guess that what happens when your a noob. DEAD IN THE WATER!

Look at your memory settings.

Try 333 Mhz FSB freq which in the nVidia chipsets same as FSB clock of 1333 MHz.

Set your memory to Linked. You should see your memory clock drop to 667 MHz. This will give you a 1:1 FSB:RAM ratio and the best stability.

Overclocking RAM in a Core2 system gives you little, if any, additional performance.

We are all noobs at overclocking. Possible only Intel and AMD engineers could count themselves out of being noobs. Us noobs have to go slow, test often, and help each other out.

Make sure you have the latest EVGA 780i bios.
Forget about the last video here is one using your motherboard. You may want an 8x CPU multiplier to get near 3GHz as this one is 3.5GHz. Again just run the CPU at the overclock with your memory at ddr2 800. If this doesn't work you may have a software issue as I don't see this low of an OC taking much more power than stock.

There are lots of things prime95 doesn't test and 2 hours isn't enough for stable. Prime95 12hours is no more than 99.9% stable and just the CPU and memory. This isn't counting kernel traps which may require windows 7 service pack 1. Your sound and networking on the motherboard could be overheating. You may want to run speedfan to see all your thermals at overclock. Your motherboard bios may not support the gskills at the higher setting or it may require manual settings.

EVGA has the other high clocked gskill memory marked as incompatible above ddr2 800. Not saying you shouldn't try to overclock just test it separate from the CPU OC.
