I have an i7 2600k used for near constant processing, almost 24/7, with 75%-100% CPU utilization continuously with the stock heatsink/fan.

When i'm running the processing, I get 80-90C up to 97C before Ubuntu slows things down, which causes problems for my application.

There is no graphics card in the box (just using on-board) plus 1 HDD - nothing else in a Cooler Master case with several fans.

What are my best cooling options? Am I going to be able to run this as hard as I want and keep it in an acceptable range?

I have the zalman 9900B Max cooler on an I7 2600 -4 ghz running video encoding and pro tools. At idle it ranges from 22 degrees (c) to 28 degrees, at 100% load it does not get above 59 degrees (c). I had the same problem as you with the stock cooler and got heat up to 92 degrees when running 100% load.

natemare im just wondering how you overclocked a non k cpu? if your looking at affordable fans id recomned articsilver5 thermal paste and a hyper212 evo with a pushpull configuration on it,kinda hard to say exactly what would work best because we dont know how large your case is

The motherboard that I have -Asus P8P67 EVO V has an auto tuning overclock facility that works on the locked 2600. It is running at 103mhz bclk with a 39x multipler on the turbo boost. It also applies this overclock to all 4 cores. I think this works on all P67 Asus boards.

noctua d14 is my favorite air cooler, but depends on case size and budget.

If you are not planning much overclocking the Coolermaster heatsink mentioned above is a great option.

 

You want to overclock that system until it begs you to stop(of anything past maybe 4.4i would guess), get the NH D14

 

The NH D14 has soo much heat dissipation ability(so it goes to waste, but is silent), it is wasted unless you overclock.

 

I personally have the CNPS 10X Flex with 2 coolermaster blade master fans(damn i want Noctuas for the lower noise, but the coolermaster ones are not too bad.).

 

The same heatsink with a fan from a coolermaster Geminii S got me low 60's and a peak on the hottest core of 68 @ 4.4(30 hours of prime95).

 

Sandy Bridge cpus are actually very good(and not too hard to cool), but come with a real bad stock cooler.

 

I am running prime to see how my current setup works.

 

EDIT PEAK 64, average 60. Case FT03 (Top fan NF P12)
