Hey Guys, i was think about what to use as an inhibitor to stop stuff growing in my loop (with out buying one) and was wandering if anyone had ever used Copper (II) Sulphate (CuSO4) given that its highly toxic to aquatic life (and a whole bunch of other stuff like E. Coli, Legionares Disease and us ofcourse...)
I guess the down sides to using CuSO4 would be
It would make the coolant conductive, though i dont think much would needed.
It reacts with anything more reactive than copper, like calcium in hard water, which would form calcium carbonate.
And apparently it can react with hydrogen ions at higher temperatures to form sulphuric acid?!
Has anyone ever used CuSO4 as an inhibitor? Or have any ideas, recommendations, warnings, experience or comments or anything else on using it or another non-bought addative?
PS I have nothing against bought addatives, i just wanted to see what else could be used before i go out and buy one.
Yeah exactly those. Though i currently have it in crystalline form not that it wouldnt be hard to make up a solution haha.
Has anyone ever used these and know if they are effective?
Most of us use one or other other...or some form of them from other brands. They have been used for years by watercooling people as growth inhibitors. Almost every watercooling sticky (including mine) references them as recommended for any loop running plain distilled water (which we also recommend).
I read through the stickes a little while back now, they told me pretty much every thing i needed to know, but i never realised until now that the recommended biocides referenced, like PTNuke or Dead-Water, contained Copper Sulphate as there active ingredient. I guess copper suphlate really works and in the long term to.. Well in that case ill just make up my own solution that is the same concentration as the ones you linked me to.
This forum and every one on it is truly awesome! Cheers Rubix!
