No, you'll want a P67 or Z68 based motherboard. :)

Yup its based on the P67 express chipset, although don't expect huge overclocks, its not even got any VRM cooling.

I'd opt for the Gigabyte board as it has better expansion slots (for graphics cards, sound cards ETC..) and support for faster RAM.

What do you mean VRM cooling?? I won't be doing any overclocking until I get water cooling, is that still a problem??

Reply to terminbed

VRM's (or Voltage regulator modules) deliver the power (from the PSU) to the CPU

Obviously when your overclocking your highly likely to increase the amount of voltage in order to sustain stability, with more voltage passing through the VRM's more heat is generated, so ideally when overclocking you'd want active cooling or atleast a heaksink over the VRM's to help dissipate the heat.

Seems alittle strange to me that your going for a low budget motherboard and watercooling..

Well this is my first build, I was aiming for under £450 and then adding water cooling. What would you recommend, not bothering with cooling and getting a better motherboard? This is what I am planning on getting https://www.aria.co.uk/WishList/tdpy3HIrT-NKh0qctwHxEA,, this and a motherboard and then cooling, if not that then what would you recommend, please could you give links?

Get rid of that horrible PSU (wouldn't trust it to power my toaster)

Quality brand: https://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Com [...] ctId=42487

The HD6770 uses less power and has roughly the same performance as the GTX550 Ti and £19 cheaper
https://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Com [...] ctId=47402

Mobo: Got loads of room for upgrades and will handle moderate overclocking with ease + they have it on super dooper uber ultra elite price
https://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecial [...] ctId=44075

Your RAM and case choice are ok considering your budget, what kind of water cooling are you thinking of? (closed loop system like a corsair H80 or a custom loop?)

I was thinking of the h60 as that's the cheapest aria does, is there any problem with that. Thanks for all the help btw I really dont know about half of this stuff :p

Reply to terminbed

Yeah nothing wrong with the H60, fairly good price at the moment as well. :)

I was just thinking that the PSU you linked is only 430w, is this actually powerful enough?

Reply to terminbed

Also I was wondering is are there any cheaper motherboards I could use? because the price is starting to creep a bit high, is there anything I could cut back on? Keeping an i5.

Yup, absolutely, with the specs the recommended wattage would be 400W, take into consideration that corsair arguably make the best quality power supplies then you can see its easily enough. :)

Cheaper, but potentially less overclocking headroom due to lack of VRM cooling.

Another alternative

http://www.ebuyer.com/290069-msi-z [...] 8s-g43-g3-

I've looked through Ebuyer, Ariia, Novatech and overclockers.co.uk and those are the cheapest s1155 boards if you want to do atleast some overclocking.

They're both EXTREMELY similar, the Gigabyte board has a slightly better audio chip and 1 PCI-E x 16 lane + 1 PCI-E x 4 lane as a pose to MSI's x1 lane... So I would choose the Gigabyte board unless its significantly more expensive.

IMO you wouldn't really notice the difference between either board, you may just want to go for the cheapest.

Hello,
I've decided that I can't afford the Intel due to the price of the motherboards. So I put together: https://www.aria.co.uk/WishList/uEvqWFzhoDpoibkSN8gtnQ,,
If you could make sure that it is all compatible, and I was wondering if I would be able to link this to a VGA monitor I have until I have the money to upgrade to a new one. Also, is the 6850 in the List better than: https://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Com [...] ctId=44472
Thanks for all the help, I really appreciate it.

Reply to terminbed

The HD6850 is the faster card, take a look here :)
http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] 917-5.html

The components in your shopping basket are all compatible so no worries there

You would be able to connect the HD6850 to a VGA monitor but you would need either a DVI to VGA cable or adapter, the HD6850 may come with a DVI to VGA adapter but I'd buy one separately just in-case.
If your going to use a DVI to VGA adapter then you'll also need a standard VGA to VGA cable aswell.

Wow, I hate spending this much money.
Would the AMD PC be better OCed than an i5 not overclocked?
And I don't see why the i5 can't be OCed without a P67 or Z68, could you explain?
Because some of the cheaper motherboards say they have OCing capabilities.
Thanks again

I guess it's down to marketing, they want you to spend more money and buy a board designed for overclocking.
I believe some H61/67 boards have an "overclock button" where the board will overclock the processor, but not by much and doesn't allow for manual tweaking.

You could also adjust the BLCK frequency and memory speed on a H61/67 board just not the multiplier.

The Core i5 2500K is a fair bit faster than the 960T, you'd have to overclock the nuts off it to get near the performance of the 2500K at stock unfortunately

Below is a review comparing various CPU's, it doesn't include the 960T but the 965 and 955BE are pretty close to the 960T performance.

Ok, I might just borrow some money, :p i only have the possibility to buy one because I won an auction on eBay for £135 for one. But it doesnt come with a fan, so the only way I can be anywhere near the total price, is by getting an air cooler (artic cooling freezer 13) any problems? https://www.aria.co.uk/WishList/N7BseMZ-GKpztBSxfaYelQ,,
Also will I still be able to OC it, and by how much?
Thanks again :p

Reply to terminbed

Its not a great cooler and I expect the airflow inside the case will be mediocre to be honest but I still reckon you could overclock a 2500K will less than stock voltage, perhaps to around 4 to 4.2Ghz

My old 2600K was a pretty bad overclocker but I could still get 4Ghz with 1.1V, the stock voltage was 1.28V.

As I sure your aware Watts = heat so undervolting and overclocking is a good idea if heat is an issue but you want maximum performance.

Ok, if I'll probably do that if I get it. But if it's a problem, then I'll upgrade to water cooling when I get the money :)
Thanks

No probs

I'm not sure if that cooler comes with thermal paste. If you find it doesn't grab some AS5

https://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Com [...] uctId=9573

Its a great thermal paste and will help decrease temps :)

Back to the GPU, my friend is basically saying that I shouldn't get an Ati because the support and drivers suck, and that they have a high failure rate. Is this true?
and in which case should I get the 550ti instead of the 6850?
Thanks a bunch :P

Hey Dude, it's been a while, I have built my pc completely, however when I turn on the power, I get the beep, all the fans and lights come on, but nothing shows up on my monitor.
What could be the problem?
