I plan on getting an Intel i5 2500k soon.

Motherboard will be a ASRock Z68 Extreme3

Now i do plan to do some overclocking. But is an aftermarket cooler like the Coolermaster Hyper 212+ worth it in terms of performance?

Yes, most definitely. The only reason to not get one is if you are going to run at stock settings.

With a stock cooler, you can get a small OC out of it, but you'd be well within the limits of your CPU. It takes aftermarket cooling to really unleash the full potential, and even then most tower coolers will fall short of your true max OC.

Granted, most people aren't going to want to push it to the max, so a Hyper 212 Plus is ideal because it is one of the cheapest, yet very effective, coolers you can buy.

^+1 I agree 100% if you plan on oc'ing that cpu the 212+ or new EVO version are terrific units for the price( the supplied thermal paste is very good) and easy to install.
