First of all; Ear canal or headset?

Manufacturer?

I'm using Sennheiser purely for my iPod - initially the CX300ii's ($30) and now the IE6 ($99).

Had Skullcandy as well - Full Metal Jacket. Not too shabby but too heavy and the cable too short. Luckily that biatch at the airport stole it with the iPod which brought me back to Sennheiser. And for good reason - love their earphones.

I just got some Dr Dre beat Studios, and they are sick, and thump like crazy.

I've always used Shure in-ear. At the moment I use the SE310's, they're very good but I'd prefer a fuller base range.

Are these solely for your scummy apple product?

If so In-ear are probably best as they don't leak sound as much as even closed back headphones AFAIK.

I need new ones myself as using a cheap sony pair. For home listening I do have my senn 595's which are great but not good for on the go.

Well, it's mostly for iPod. I have Phillips headset but I seldom use it.

If I do, I use an external Sound Card via the PC to amplify the sound a bit because on-board sound is weak.

But yes, Sennheiser ear canals is my favourite currently but I'm a bit disappointed with the IE6 with regards to bass - it has a lower frequency pick up than the CX300, but the bass at times seem a bit flat. Clarity though is awesome, but somehow the bass is a tad disappointing.

Whatever about the 'phones you choose, have a look at this:

FiiO E7

It's totally awesome. You still need good quality source and earphone quality, but this really takes things to a different level.

As good as it seems, the problem will be carrying the additional unit alongside an ipod as an example.

But it's true, the source (amplified or not) and good 'phones are critical.

I usually use mine on my frequent business flights, so portability is not an issue to the same extent. Also I use it when playing videos and music on my Archos 5.

In that case it would work awesome.

I use the ipod purely for day time use (taxi's and when moving about) and when travelling (music selection in flight doesn't come close to my library). If I could find an Archos here in the UAE I'd test drive it - but right now for storage and battery lifetime the ipod is sufficient for me - especially with my love for free podcasts via itunes.

I do use my earphones in the plane as well - but without the adapter. Still works though.

I might have to go dig my valve headphone amp out with all this talk of cans.

Nice one!
