Blu-ray drive dead?

Forum Storage : Optical Media Blu-ray drive dead?

I am dangerously close to throwing my 80$ samsung blu ray drive out the window. I haven't had the thing for more than a month. About an hour ago, I started ripping a few cd's. On the third one, the program crashed. After restarting my computer, I looked at my screen with dread, realizing that the cd was no longer being read. I popped in a dvd. Same issue. I popped in a blu ray, no detection whatsoever. Ever time I pop a disk in, a high pitched sqeek goes on for about 10 seconds from the drive, and then nothing happens. Is this repairable? I really don't want to replace this thing :(

0) Change / reseat the data and power cables.
1) If you bought it recently, RMA it. Loud noises suggest a physical failure.
2) Do you have another system that you could try it in? Another drive you could try in its place?
500) If you like taking risks and believe it is a physical problem, you could disassemble it and try to fix the squeek [:wyomingknott:1]. I recently fixed our aging DVD / VHS combo deck; the tray didn't come out / go in. I did this mainly to get my fifteen-year-old daughter's hands into the hardware.
