Forum Windows XP : Drivers How to reinstall a dvd driver on a gateway 700

Helping a friend with a Gateway 700XL that refuses to recolonize the DVD drive. I checked and the Registry does not have the DVD entries. Gateway does not have any drivers available for download for this model (that would be way to easy). My friend cannot locate his original distribution disks.

Does anyone know where I can download the gateway 700XL DVD drivers?

Thanks.

This was the second thing I attempted, however, the UpperFilters and LowerFilters REG_SZ entries are nonexistant. There's also a missing sub directory under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class, Key - 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318. There should be a dir '0002' that contains all of the drive info and a sub dir labeled audio.

I hate to cut & paste these keys and values in from another registry and see what happens but maybe I will have to.

Sorry if you have already done this, but is a Drive letter assigned to the DVD device ?
Insert some media and bring up disk management.

It does have a drive letter I did not go into disk management. I can look at that next time I see the system.

I did however right click the drive letter from 'my computer', selected properties, seems like a normal mgmt menu other than under auto play - content type, it does not list DVD but does list CD. Won't read a cd either. Also under the hardware tab there are 4 or 5 device drivers and a couple of USB drivers listed but no DVD drivers.
