Forum Motherboards & Memory : Tyan Tyan n3600r (s2912e) info and issues

I recently purchased a second hand Tyan n3600r:
http://www.tyan.com/product_SKU_sp [...] =600000049

Other hardware:
2 x AMD Quad Core Opteron 2376 HE - 2.3Ghz OS2376PAL4DGI
6 x QIMONDA HYS72T256220HP-3S-A 2GB PC2-5300 DDR2-667MHz
2 x Dynatron A84G Copper Heatsink for Tyan 1207 motherboard

Plus 6 TB of disk. :pt1cable:

I have triple checked everything for fit and requirements, as an example the memory comes recommended officially by TYAN and the fans are a special sort with 4,1 inch mounting (not very common I think).

Next step is a bios upgrade, not sure it is needed, but that will be taken care of tonight.
The reason for this post is to try to find out if anyone else have experienced the following behaviour:

- hit the power button
- comp goes beep in sequence: 1-3-1 and does that twice (could be 1-3-1-1-3-1 but unlikely)
- a touch on the Reset button, and computer starts fine

So basically I have to start the comp twice, sorta. Anyone recognize that behaviour?
It may be fixed by a bios check and upgrade later, but still wondering.

That beep combo is not specified by Tyan, or available in the manuals last pages.

I will keep you posted. :hello:

Other new boards sometimes require a reset to post. It's not unusual. You are lucky your board already works with a quad core. The older versions wouldn't post without flashing the bios first.

Ok more info.
Sometimes I do really n00bish errors. :p

Turns out the beeps were warning for bad ram config. I had the ram sticks in same coloured sockets, when the opposite should have been the case. Boy was I worried yesterday. I did a CMOS reset and nothing. Would not boot. I kept hearing the beep uninterrupted for some 10 boots in a row and I was beginning to have nightmares...

Then after switching ram conf several times it suddenly started and ran stable.

Finally BIOS ugrade!
So I had to use a IDE floppy, which is ok (usb floppy was not detected), the old bios version was 3.5 something, and the new 5.00 and also from 2010 (!) so everything great. On small issue though, the BIOS flash will not work with an ordinary W98 boot disk due to himem.sys, so get the one with "no drivers" from www.bootdisk.com.

I feel lucky o1die, gonna pump out this dual quadcore to the max.

Still a bit worried about the fans though, as I posted here:
