If the partition is showing up as raw, then it needs formatted first then you can assign a drive letter to it.

If you do that you will lose whatever was on it. (Hawkeye22, I apologize for following you around and disagreeing with your posts!)

If there was data on it that you want to recover, and if you did not have current backups, there are programs that will read the sectors and try to recover the files. These are usually free to scan and about $100 to unlock to recover files. If you search the forums for Disk Recovery, you will find some options. I'm kind of fond of EASEUS these days: http://www.easeus.com/partition-recovery/ , but all of them work reasonably well.

Do you have any software from Symantec installed?
Did you try to login in safe mode?
Is it an old HDD or a new one?

Run diagnostics on your hard drive... http://hddguru.com/software/2006.01.22-HDDScan/

If there is no drive problem try the free version of... http://findandmount.com/

Else try and take a sector by sector clone image onto a new drive. And attempt recovery from the cloned image. Use the free verion... http://www.miray.de/products/sat.hdclone.html
